Flashback to last summer, when students in a new DGES field course spent time at the Lake Texoma OU Biological Station collecting environmental data and putting their geospatial skills to work — the first time a DGES interdisciplinary field research course was offered at the Bio Station!

Students from Geospatial Science, GIS, Environmental Sustainability, Biology, Psychology and Multidisciplinary Studies worked in research groups investigating water quality, red cedar encroachment, native and edible plants, and the ecology of a nearby island.

Along the way, they gained hands-on experience with geospatial data collection, field mapping and environmental sampling while exploring ecoregions, ancestral land rights and local wildlife. They even went on a field trip to Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.

Big news for Bee Sidwell!

The University of Oklahoma Aviation academic advisor has been named a recipient of the 2026 Outstanding New Advisor Award from NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, a national recognition for advisors who have demonstrated exceptional work with students within their first three years in the profession.

“It’s sincerely a joy and an honor to guide our Aviation students from freshman year to graduation as an advisor,” Sidwell said. “It feels really special to be part of their academic journey and to watch the next generation of aviation professionals head out into the field each semester.”

Bee will be recognized at the NACADA Annual Conference in Oklahoma City this October. 🎉
