Alumni & friends: We need your help!

Dear Friends of St. Anselm of Canterbury,
For years, St. Anselm of Canterbury has been a home of welcome, prayer, and community for students at the University of Oklahoma. Many of you know firsthand how much this place matters: it is more than a building. It is a refuge, a hub, and a witness to God’s radically inclusive love.
Today, that witness is more urgently needed than ever. We live in a cultural climate where too many young people are being drawn toward voices of fear, division, and exclusion. In this moment, the message of love, acceptance, and belonging that Canterbury offers is not optional, it is essential.
Outside our building hangs a simple but bold statement: God Loves Everyone. This Gospel truth has been stolen, broken, ripped and cut, it has been vandalized and destroyed multiple times simply because we dare to proclaim Christ’s love for our LGBTQ+ siblings and all those who find themselves on the margins. And yet we keep replacing it, because that message is too important to silence, because we are committed to fixing things one more time than they are broken. Just last week, a student walked through our doors because that sign, damaged and replaced again and again, had been a constant invitation for more than a year. This was a young man who had never stepped foot in a church, never opened a Bible, never sung a hymn. And yet the call of unconditional love proved irresistible. That is the power of this ministry and the radical welcome St. Anselm of Canterbury offers every day.
To continue offering this radical hospitality, we are leaning on our alumni and people of good faith to help care for the students who find their way through our doors.
Your support will help provide:
• A new HVAC system to keep our worship space comfortable,
• Reliable Wi-Fi so students can study and stay connected,
• A washer and dryer for basic needs, a growing need amongst students and neighbors within the community
• Replacement of our “God Loves Everyone” sign whenever it is vandalized, ensuring this bold invitation remains visible to all who pass by.
At a time when fear and hate seem to have the upper hand, St. Anselm of Canterbury is one of the few places where students hear a different word: love, not fear; blessing, not curses; peace, not violence. Your gift ensures that word continues to be spoken, boldly, publicly, and without apology at the University of Oklahoma.
Will you join us in sustaining this ministry at this crucial time?
In addition, 10% of all funds raised will go to Norman Care-A-Vans, a local nonprofit founded in part by one of our students. Norman Care-A-Vans provides free transportation to people experiencing homelessness, helping them reach shelters, medical care, and other essential resources, as well as providing hot home cooked meals 4 days a week. By supporting St. Anselm’s, you are helping transform students’ lives while also strengthening our broader community, showing that God’s love reaches both those inside our doors and those in need around us.
With gratitude and hope,
Fr. Blake Woods
