Around the Classroom: GEN2012L Material Mechanics Lab
Material strength isn't everything in structural engineering or material science, stability is a critical aspect which must be considered.

In this lab, our civil and mechanical engineering students are applying their recently learned column buckling theory and comparing it with a series of experimental models. This is a critical failure mode that students must be aware of when designing real-world engineering solutions.

At this year’s civil engineering senior design capstone presentation, students showcased their redevelopment plans for a location in Lawrence, Mass., bringing together everything they’ve learned to tackle real-world challenges. From environmental impact and budgeting to timelines and full project planning, each detail reflected months of hard work and collaboration.

Friends, family, alumni and industry professionals gathered to see the results as teams presented their work and answered questions from alumni representatives.

Our students in environmental engineering put passive solar energy to the test by designing and building their own solar ovens. With ovens reaching up to 150°F, teams were challenged to roast s’mores using nothing but the materials they could find and the power of the sun. A perfect (and delicious) way to connect sustainability, engineering and a little creativity 🍫🔥
