On April 29, scientist and composer Dr. Hector Rasgado-Flores presented a special performance of his "Suite de los Elementos" at El Colegio Nacional, one of Mexico’s most distinguished cultural and intellectual hubs. For any scholar, an invitation to perform at El Colegio is a significant professional milestone, as the institution serves as a premier stage for the country's highest achievements in the arts and sciences.

During the concert, Dr. Rasgado-Flores performed 14 of his original compositions, while six newly completed pieces were premiered by a guest performer, bringing the full suite to 20 movements. This collection features several pieces dedicated to colleagues at CMS, including those who have retired as well as active faculty: "Copper" dedicated to Janice Urban, "Selenium" to Judy Potashkin, "Niobium" to Melissa Chen, and "Silver" to Nutan Vaidya. Ultimately, what began as a tribute to the International Year of Chemistry has evolved into an "emblematic piece of chemistry," proving that the periodic table can be as lyrical as it is logical.

Two of our first-year medical students, Sam Pardini and Servando Garcia-Chavez, and CMS faculty Dr. Maria Gomez, participated in a career exploration event for students from Waterford Union High School in WI. Sam and Servando worked with an interprofessional team of healthcare professionals representing lab, pharmacy, EMS, trauma, ER, flight medicine, IT, radiology, obstetrics, nursing, and physical therapy to lead a trauma and critical care simulation lab for the high school students. The high school students got a close-up look at potential career paths in the healthcare field.

Last month, a group of first-year CMS students went to Washington, DC to attend the AMA Medical Student Advocacy Conference, where they learned about ways to advocate for better healthcare policies. While they were in DC, the students visited the offices of Illinois and Florida senators and House representatives, advocating for the REDI Act (a proposed bill that would allow medical residents to defer their student loans interest-free while they complete their internship or residency program), pharmacy benefit manager reform, and increased NIH funding.

Earlier this month, we welcomed CMS alumna Dr. Vivian Wong to campus to give a grand rounds presentation, have coffee with students interested in dermatology, and receive her Distinguished Alumni Award for Early Career Achievement, which was announced at the CMS Alumni Reunion this past fall. Dr. Wong, CMS Class of 2014, is a board-certified dermatologist who also holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology. She also serves as an advisor to the RFU student interest group in dermatology, mentoring medical students, guiding aspiring dermatologists, and shaping future leaders in medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Wong on this well-deserved award! We appreciate the impact you've made in the field of dermatology, and also the time and energy you devote to our students.

Students and faculty alike may have seen Dean Archana Chatterjee working on her crochet projects on campus, whether it’s between meetings or during a session with the RFU Stitchers student organization. Now Dean Chatterjee is donating several of her crocheted creations to a good cause! Working with “Care To Knit,” a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide hand-knit and crocheted items to those in need, Dr. Chatterjee’s handmade blankets and scarves will bring comfort and warmth to people in shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes, including newborns and veterans.
