Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is a national leader in interprofessional medical and healthcare education, offering a doctor of medicine program through the Chicago Medical School, doctor of podiatric medicine program through the Dr. William M. Grab your favorite costume, lace up your sneakers and mark your calendar for the ICC Monster Dash Costume Fun Run and Walk! 👻

We are bringing the RFU community together for a family-friendly morning of movement that directly impacts healthcare access here in Lake County.

Every stride taken supports the Interprofessional Community Clinic, a student-led pro-bono clinic supported by faculty and health professionals from Rosalind Franklin University. The clinic has provided essential care for local residents in need of medical services. Through this collaborative partnership between students, faculty, clinicians, and community members, the clinic delivers patient-centered primary care alongside specialty services in podiatric medicine, physical therapy, psychology, women’s health, and pharmacy counseling. Patients also receive vaccinations, lab services, glucometers, and diabetes education classes, ensuring quality healthcare remains accessible to everyone.

We're gathering on October 25th, 2026, at The Pavilion. Registration opens at 10 AM, followed by the 5K run and 1K walk starting at 10:30 AM, with an awards and raffle ceremony wrapping things up at 11:30 AM.

Student tickets are $15 each or 3 for $30, while faculty and community pricing is $25 each or 2 for $40.

What a weekend at the 2026 Chicago Marathon! 🏃‍♂️

Inside the medical tents, our Doctor of Physical Therapy and Podiatry programs volunteered to provide hands-on clinical care, injury evaluation, and acute recovery support to participants.

To top off an amazing day, Dr. Frank Hughes, associate professor of the College of Pharmacy, crossed the finish line after running all 26.2 miles!

Opportunities like this allow RFU to extend its clinical mission beyond the classroom, offering support and healthcare expertise when and where our neighbors need it most.

Fall Open House is quickly approaching!

Join us on Saturday, October 24 for a look at life at Rosalind Franklin University. You will have the opportunity to explore our academic programs up close, tour our learning spaces and campus facilities, and speak directly with faculty and current students who were once navigating the same choices.

Throughout the day, our interactive Discover Sessions will give you firsthand insight into life at RFU. Hear directly from current students about balancing classes, clinical experiences and campus involvement while building a supportive community.

With more than 200,000 Physician Assistants driving more than 620 million patient interactions every year, it’s no surprise that the PA path is widely recognized as one of the top healthcare careers in the country, and one of the fastest-growing fields in medicine. Each of those interactions represents a patient heard, a diagnosis made, and a care plan set in motion.

Here at Rosalind Franklin University, we’ve been part of that story for more than three decades. Since our PA program was founded in 1991, more than 1,500 RFU graduates have stepped into the workforce as leaders in their field.

Healthcare moves fast, so we’re making sure education at Rosalind Franklin University moves faster.

James Carlson, PhD, PA-C, CHSE-A, has been named provost of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

From AI integration to team-based care models, healthcare technology and practice are changing every single day. Preparing our students for the future means delivering an education that adapts just as fast by focusing on practical decision-making, clinical judgment, and lifelong learning long after graduation day.

As a two-time alumnus who earned both his master’s in Physician Assistant Practice and his PhD here on campus, Dr. Carlson’s connection to RFU spans over two decades. Throughout his career as a professor, dean of the College of Health Professions, and leader of our simulation programs, he has been instrumental in shaping how our students learn.

He’s lived our history and knows where healthcare is headed, making him uniquely qualified to guide RFU’s academic enterprise into its next chapter.

From a single-floor factory in Chicago to our home today at Rosalind Franklin University, a lot has changed since our Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine Class of 1923 gathered for their group photo. But as we celebrate International Podiatry Day, we recognize how our dedication to foot and ankle care has remained exactly the same.

Founded in 1912 as the Illinois College of Chiropody and Orthopedics, the institution was built on Dr. William M. Scholl's core belief that foot and ankle health is fundamental to overall well-being. With an aging population and an increasingly active society, that mission is more vital today than ever before.

Scholl College is the only podiatric medical school in the nation to receive the T35 research training grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Graduates consistently match with top residency programs across the country, and today, one out of every three practicing podiatrists in the United States is a Scholl College graduate. That represents an active network of more than 6,000 alumni keeping communities healthy and moving every day.

The truth behind the most famous photograph in DNA history has finally come to light.

For decades, popular history and James Watson’s controversial memoir suggested that Rosalind Franklin failed to grasp the significance of her own work, specifically, the iconic Photograph 51 that helped unlock the helical structure of DNA.

Now, a groundbreaking new analysis published in the Journal of the History of Biology sets the record straight.

Science historians Alistair Sponsel and Brian Sutton went back to Dr. Franklin’s original notebooks. They discovered that days before taking Photograph 51, she analyzed Photograph 49, a mathematically identical, yet cosmetically flawed image. Her meticulous notes revealed she had already identified the helical structure, calculated the spiral's length (34 angstroms), and measured the bases per turn.

She left no detailed notes on Photograph 51 simply because she didn't need to repeat herself. Dr. Franklin took the second image purely to capture a flawless, publication-quality demonstration of a breakthrough she had already achieved and documented.

This discovery restores full ownership to the woman who earned it, correcting a monumental historical oversight and ensuring future generations see Dr. Franklin as the scientific visionary she was.

Keynote speaker Dr. Elizabeth Comen, medical oncologist and associate professor at NYU Langone Health, walked us through just a few of the historical biases in women’s healthcare that still affect women today, and how predatory wellness trends so easily step in to fill the void.

Dr. Comen was joined by a brilliant panel: Deb Anderson, Dr. Brian Feinstein, Logan Fletcher, and Brittani Garayalde, moderated by Dr. Amanda Simanek. Together, they shared candid experiences, examined the root causes of gender health disparities, and explored pathways forward.

Nicole Ferrara, PhD, an assistant professor and neuroscientist at Rosalind Franklin University (RFU), has been awarded a five-year, $2.3 million NIH grant to study how social disruptions like COVID-19 impact the developing adolescent brain.

Dr. Ferrara’s research focuses on the basomedial amygdala (BMA). Her team is investigating how breaks in social contact shape neural processes and contribute to challenges like anxiety, depression, and social dysregulation.

Janice Urban, PhD, interim executive vice president of research and director of the Center for Neurobiology of Stress Resilience and Psychiatric Disorders, shared that uncovering these brain changes is key to developing better therapeutic interventions for mental health disorders that emerge during adolescence.
