The Pathology team at Cummings School's Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals discovered a novel species of the Castellaniella bacteria, publishing it the Journal of Applied Microbiology.

“I was not expecting this case to be a novel bacterial species. If you think about wildlife, there's a lot to be discovered—for example, if you collect a sample for next-generation sequencing from a random tree frog species from Panama, you might find something new. In this case, we were working with hospitalized dogs.”

On May 14, students, residents, and faculty were inducted to the Tufts Apha Beta Chapter of the Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society at the annual Phi Zeta Induction.

Dr. Carlos Pinto, Dorrance H. Hamilton Professor in Applied Reproductive Medicine and Chair of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, presented Research Within Reach… Curiosity, Inquiry, and Discovery in Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Wade Tenney, Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and President of the Tufts Apha Beta Chapter, shared the history of the Society, and presented membership certificates to new student, resident and faculty inductees. The ceremony concluded with all inductees stating the Phi Zeta pledge and signing the official member logbook.

This year marks the 101st Anniversary of the Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society which recognizes and promotes scholarship and research pertaining to the welfare and diseases of animals through sponsored events such as the Annual Phi Zeta Manuscript Awards for Basic and Clinical Science, lecture presentations, and research days. This year the Tufts Apha Beta Chapter will present an award at Cummings School’s annual Veterinary Research Day in September.

Humane World for Animals annually recognizes professionals across a spectrum of roles advocating for animals with the Trailblazers in Animal Welfare Award. Among this year’s group of honorees is Dr. Gregory Wolfus, V98, founding director of Tufts at Tech Community Veterinary Clinic and associate clinical professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences.

“While I’m honored to oftentimes be the face of Tufts at Tech, Drs. Jennifer Grady, Kayla Sample, and Nicole Freeman, all the volunteer doctors, and our incredible staff, they’re the ones who make Tufts at Tech special and run every day. They deserve this award as much as I do—it’s an amazing group of people.”

At Sunday's Commencement, Dean Alastair Cribb acknowledged the appointment of Dr. Dominique Penninck, professor of large animal clinical sciences, to Professor Emerita of Diagnostic Imaging.

Since 1989, Penninck has served patients at Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) and Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA). As professor of diagnostic imaging in the Departments of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Small Animal Clinical Sciences, Penninck has drawn on deep expertise across all diagnostic imaging modalities, especially ultrasound, and interventional radiology to care for patients at both hospitals and to train veterinary students, interns, and residents. She is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, serving as president of the latter for two years.

Cummings School celebrated its 44th Commencement this past weekend kicking off with the Dean's Dinner on Friday and the ceremony Sunday afternoon.

McKenzie Raquel Langford, VG26 (MCM) delivered the graduate address, highlighting commonality among all the degrees conferred Sunday. “One Health is a mindset, it’s a way of paying attention to the world…. That mindset does not belong to one program. It belongs to every person graduating from this veterinary school today….You are the bridge between animals and people, you are the early warning network, and increasingly, you are part of the solution to some of the most complex challenges we face.”
