Fisheries Ecology and Acoustics Laboratory

Fisheries Ecology and Acoustics Laboratory Here in the Boswell lab, we focus on understanding the processes that mediate behavioral and distributional patterns in coastal and marine organisms!

Through the application and development of acoustic methods in both the field and laboratory, we seek to describe and understand processes that influence and structure coastal and marine communities. With a focus on habitat and resource utilization, as well as predator and prey interactions and behaviors. Research in the lab varies geographically, with research in the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, the north Atlantic, and the coastal waters of Florida.

Meet our REU Student, Pasquale (Puck) Arnone!
πŸ”ˆπŸ”‰πŸ”Š
β€œHello! My name is Pasquale (Puck) Arnone. I am from Barrington, Rhode Island, and I am a rising senior and lacrosse player at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. I am majoring in Coastal and Environmental Science, with a minor in Data Science.

Spending the summer with the FIU Coastal REU Program in the Boswell Lab has given me a wide range of experiences to help prepare me for the future! I have met amazing people in a variety of careers, including Dr. Kevin Boswell, and my mentor, Ian Areford.

My project builds off previous work in the Boswell lab. Using data from DEEPEND cruises 2-6, I investigated how oceanographic water types affect migration speeds in the Gulf. Through this work, I was able to gain experience in coding, acoustics, and oceanography.

The FIU Coastal REU Program provided experience in the field and in the classroom. I was able to experience all that Miami has to offer and grow skills useful in furthering my education. My experience this summer has been a blast! As I enter my senior year, I hope to continue my education in graduate school and find a way to blend the oceanography field with acoustics and
data science.” -Pasquale (Puck) Arnone, Summer 2026 FIU Coastal REU

A huge congratulations to our undergraduate lab technician, Chase Schaffhauser, for graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology!
🐠🦈🐠
Since 2023, Chase has been an integral part of our lab… assisting with field work, outreach events, and being the go-to person on campus for all your 3D printing needs!
πŸ”ˆπŸ”‰πŸ”Š
Please join us in congratulating Chase and wishing him all the best as he is about to begin his Master of Science in Marine Science & Oceanography under Dr. Matt Ajemian in the Fisheries Ecology and Conservation Lab at FAU’s Harbor Branch!

The Boswell Lab had an amazing time at the recent STEAM Night hosted by Florida International University at Cooper City Elementary School!
πŸŒŠπŸ¦‘πŸͺΌ
Lab members Chelsea, Aeden, Arianna, and Gina led a hands-on activity, β€œOcean Zone Quest: Dive into the Deep!” to introduce students to the various ocean zones and the critters that inhabit them! We loved seeing their curiosity light up as they learned how life adapts from the epi- to the hadalpelagic zones β€” from sun-loving surface-swimmers to mysterious deep-sea dwellers.
