I caught my first basketball game of the season and was thrilled to watch the Bears take full control of the court early on with a 22 to 0 lead in the first quarter against Husson University of Bangor, Maine and then extend that lead all the way through to the final quarter concluding with a 70 point victory: 106-36 final tally. Just wow. We’re in for quite a season!

The Smith Fencing Club, Hell’s Belles, hosts an invitational every year and fencing teams and clubs from all over the Northeast come to spend the day in competition. I love seeing as a convener of this tournament and for a sport that was once only the purview of boys and men.

Co-captain Huda showed me around the ITT Saturday afternoon, pointing out one of our first years doing very well and helping us understand how Smith’s club behaves like a varsity sport and does a great deal of the work themselves.

Our coach was calculating scores but took time out to shake hands.

Thank you, HB co-presidents, Hannah and Huda, for the invitation to the Invitational!

When the doorbell rang at 8:30 p.m. this past Saturday evening, it wasn’t one of the a ca****la groups that sang Christmas carols to me and my husband; it was the rowing team… taking a break from studying and decked out in peejays! So much fun!!! ♥️🚣🏽🎼🎶 You may not have known it, but (Smith) Bears row and sing!!! This is what we mean by Open Curriculum, Baby! is the greatest!

Six thousand people raising nearly $900,000 for Safe Passage this year to support keeping people safe from domestic violence and educated in healthy relationships!

First came the walkers (my group), then the runners and walkers, and last the racers! Smith Cheer Squad was there to cheer folks on at the top of our version of Heart Break Hill! So many colorful costumes including the happiest Grinch ever! The Smith College runners were ready to go; the band was full on and helped to charge us up and bring us home; and the atmosphere was festive! And of course, there was hot chocolate for everyone! Such a great community tradition.

Being a German Short-Haired Pointer, Ranger likes the snow. But frequently, salt and sand—making walking so much better for human pedestrians—aggravate his paws, and he has been resistant to wear his dog boots. Sometimes, it’s just nice to curl up inside with a good book. Stay cozy this weekend!

Run, don’t walk, to the newly renovated and stunningly expanded Studio Museum in Harlem!

The opportunity to spend time in conversation with its director and chief curator, the incomparable visionary Thelma Golden ‘87, was a rare treat. We invoked foremothers like Mary Schmidt Campbell and Ruth Simmons and talked about the challenges and opportunities of investing in the beacons of art, provocation, beauty, and culture that reveal us to ourselves, challenge assumptions, and call us simultaneously to the past and the future.

There's nothing quite like connecting with the people who power —this week, in the heart of New York City!

Sr. Vice President for Alumnae Relations and Development Beth Raffeld allowed me to feel the energy of the city while touching base with alums—alone and with spouses— trustees, former trustees, and the daughters and sisters of Smithies. All of whom have been generous to Smith College and are eager to continue understanding higher education and contributing to Smith’s future. Particular thanks to Anita Volz Wien ’62, Peggy Block Danziger ’62, Debby Lindenauer Weinberger ’81, Dee Whalen Conway ’80, Val Tishman Diker ’59 and Charles Diker, Richard Rippe and Sandra Landau Rippe ’67, and Maya Lin—daughter of a Smithie and the internationally renowned architect of the Neilson Library. I was truly thrilled to be in the company of people who support the mission of Smith College.

The beautiful fall days have turned cool quickly and the critters of the area are gathering calories for winter! The pumpkins, gourds, and squash on my front step and on the steps of Helen Hills Hills Chapel have made for some easy pickings!
