Thanks to Ecological Landscape Alliance for a fantastic conference! So many interesting people, sessions, and information on display. It was great to meet up with Conway alums from many years and many places, all doing incredible work. Thanks to Omni Providence Hotel for the excellent accommodations. We hope to see you all again (as well as some new faces) next year!

At Conway, community is at the heart of what we do — not just in the projects our students take on, but in how we show up for our neighbors and the communities around us.🌱

This year, we’ve been proud to:
🌿 Serve as a core member of Resilient Valley, a volunteer coalition of nonprofits working together to build more resilient communities across the Pioneer Valley.
🎬 Partner with Kestrel Land Trust and Smith College CEEDS to sponsor the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, bringing people together around stories of environmental action and hope.
🤝 Join the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce and strengthen our connections with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders.

These partnerships give us opportunities to share what we know, learn from others, support good work happening close to home, and help make the Pioneer Valley a stronger, more connected place.

We’re grateful to be part of this community — and proud to give back to the place we call home.

Conway will have a strong presence at this year’s Ecological Landscape Alliance Conference in Providence — and we hope you’ll come say hello! 🌿

We’re especially excited to see two Conway alums sharing their expertise during the conference:

Rachel Lindsay ’15 of Regenerative Design Group will present “Building Healthy Soils: From Carbon Source to Carbon Sink,” offering practical strategies designers can use to reduce emissions and dramatically increase a landscape’s carbon-storing potential through better soil management.

Evan Abramson ’18 of Landscape Interactions will present “Healthy Soil through Maximum Biodiversity,” highlighting research-backed, scalable designs that build healthier soils while restoring pollinator habitat across New England.

Be sure to stop by the Conway table, too! We’ll have a table throughout the conference, including during lunch (look for the Conway logo sign!), where alums and friends are welcome to gather. Stop by to say hello and pick up a Conway sticker for your nametag — making it easier to spot fellow alums and connect with prospective students who are interested in Conway.

And on Thursday after the conference, join us for an informal Conway gathering at Trinity Brewhouse from 6–8 PM. It’s just a 5-minute walk from the Omni Providence, where the conference is being held. There’s no formal program and no need to arrive at a particular time — drop by at your leisure, grab a drink, and look for the Conway sign!

Whether you’re a Conway alum, friend, colleague, prospective student, or simply part of the ELA community, we’d love to connect with you in Providence!

🌳 From Conway to forest gardens

What happens when ecological design, permaculture, and a deep understanding of natural systems come together? For Conway alum Dave Jacke ’84, it has been the foundation of decades of work as an ecological designer, author, and educator.

This October, Dave will lead the Forest Garden Design Intensive at Horn Farm Center in Pennsylvania—a nine-day exploration of how we can design productive, resilient landscapes inspired by nature.

Forest gardens offer more than a way to grow food. They can help restore healthy landscapes, build community resilience, and imagine more abundant local futures.
Scholarships are still available for the October 16–25 intensive.

Learn more: Horn Farm Center’s Forest Garden Design Intensive: https://hubs.li/Q04spsYD0

In this nine-day intensive course, you will dig deeply into the vision, theory, and practice of designing wholesome, dynamic, and resilient edible ecosystems using temperate deciduous forests as models.
