Today, the Vermont State Police provided specialized training for our winning CSI Experience team: Siobhan, Colby, Kiley, and Heidi (two seniors, one sophomore, and one freshman representing majors in Criminal Justice, Criminology and Psychology, with minors in Leadership, Criminal Justice, and Transnational Crime).

Led by Detective Sergeant Chin, D/S Nolan (retired), D/S Nadeau, and Detective Trooper Lemnah, students gained hands-on experience in 3D crime scene modeling, blood spatter analysis, evidence recognition and search techniques, and blood reagent application. A special thank you to Public Safety for providing the space to make this immersive training possible! Stay tuned, a deeper look at the CSI Experience is coming soon.

Experiential learning is grounded in the belief that students learn best through direct experience, reflection, and active engagement. When we put students in real-world or simulated situations, we help them connect theory to practice through personal engagement, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

These principles are central to the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and evident over the past 8 days during the 2026 Washington DC Experience.

We could not conduct this trip without tremendous support from our University, specifically, the Provost's office, Development Office, Office of Academic Research, Leahy School of Cybersecurity, Marketing and Communications, and our NU Alumni Association. Thank you all for continuing to support and believe in this experience for our students!

Thank you to our strategic partners at Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, FBI, Secret Service, US Capitol Police, Supreme Court Police, US Coast Guard, and DC Metro Police. Each of you opened your doors and brought an agenda that truly helped our students learn and develop into future leaders in this field.

Thank you to our amazing alumni that helped make each of these agencies available to our students and showed up to three different alumni events for us. Your support and generosity was incredible and left lasting impressions with each of our students! Forever connected. Forever Norwich.

Finally, thank you to our amazing students! We always set out to select students for this trip that we feel are ready to make this next step in their personal development...and did these 12 students deliver! From their initial written applications, to their personal interviews, to their ex*****on each and every day last week, these students approached this trip with a strong desire to learn more about themselves, more about nation's homeland security efforts, but to also support each other during the week. You were such a joy to be with for a week! Thank you for representing yourselves, our school, and university so well!

Spent our final night as a group with a great team dinner at Founding Farmers! Then a leisurely walk around the tidal basin and memorials at night! What a fun night together and perfect ending to the 2026 SCCJ Washington DC Experience!

Here are today's student leaders reflection for the day:

"I enjoyed today's tours with the US Supreme Court Police, the US Capitol Police, and LTC Song at the Pentagon. I learned so much about two lesser-known DC law enforcement agencies and how they contribute to the overall mission of national security. It was an incredible privilege to be escorted to areas of the Supreme Court, Capitol building, and Pentagon that members of the general public don't typically get to see. Being granted access to those areas is a testament to the power of Norwich's alumni network, which is scattered across every agency and branch of the armed forces. If I've learned anything this week, it's that the access the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice provides is unmatched. I am thankful for the connections I've made this week, which are the beginnings of many important professional relationships that will come in handy in the future." Joseph - Class of 2026

"Today our group had the opportunity to visit both the United States Supreme Court and the United States Capitol. At the Supreme Court, we were able to explore several historic areas, including the Supreme Court Library and the courtroom itself. Throughout the building we observed impressive architecture and numerous historical artifacts that reflect the Court’s long-standing role in shaping the nation’s legal system. At the Capitol, we had a similar experience learning about the history and significance of the building. We viewed statues honoring influential figures from American history and explored spaces that many of us had previously only seen through media or textbooks. Being able to see these locations in person provided a much deeper appreciation for the institutions that help govern the country. Later in the afternoon, our incoming Commandant, COL Mark Denton, arranged an incredible opportunity for us to tour the Pentagon. During the visit, we learned about the impact that the events of September 11th had on the building and its personnel. We also had the chance to meet several high-ranking Army leaders and learn more about their roles. Overall, it was a memorable day filled with meaningful experiences and unique opportunities." Kensey - Class of 2028

"Once again, our group had an unforgettable day! Instead of only visiting 2 places, we visited 3 major national buildings: the Supreme Court of the U.S. with the U.S. Supreme Court Police, the U.S. Capitol Building with the U.S. Capitol Police, and the Pentagon with COL Denton NU’97, and soon to be 57th Commandant of the Norwich University Corps of Cadets. Both the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol Building were filled with our nation’s history and heritage, both of which we learned a lot about today from the in-depth and behind-the-scenes tours we received. Fun fact: there is a gym with a basketball court located directly above the Supreme Court’s Chambers, where the Supreme Court Justices meet to deliberate cases affecting our nation and its Constitution. As on other days, we learned a lot about the day-to-day duties of both agencies and their roles in protecting the people and the buildings that run the country, on both the legislative and judicial sides of the government. The Pentagon was the next place we visited, and, again, WOW! It was absolutely amazing being able to see where the Department of War carries out all of the orders for all of the U.S. Military Services and DOW agencies to aid in the protection and defense of our nation. We also had the opportunity to sit and hear about what the Army Criminal Investigation Division does for the Department of the Army with Special Agent Andrew Johnson. We finished the day off by walking around Washington, DC, looking at all of the national monuments lit up at night. Absolutely breathtaking!" Micah - Class of 2028

Wrapped up day 6 with a visit to the Pentagon where we were greeted by incoming Commandant Col. Mark Denton NU’97. Having a tour of the facility along with Marc Henderson NU’99 was great but then having a meeting with Col. Denton, Major General Shane Morgan ‘94, and Col. Brian Caplin NU’01 was such an incredible experience! Great stories and lessons shared. Certainly an afternoon the students will always remember!
