Happy President's Day!
Did you know? Built in 1825 as a Methodist parsonage, Hassett House was the birthplace of William Hassett, a Northfield native who became secretary to presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. Hassett began his journalism career with the Burlington Free Press and went on to work for several major newspapers, notably the Washington Post. Later, as a presidential secretary, he lived in the White House. When President Roosevelt died, it was Hassett who informed the American public. His Roosevelt biography, “Off the Record with FDR,” was published in 1958. Among his many achievements, he served as a Norwich Trustee. Photos of the 1987 move of his childhood home from Main near the Crescent to the lot next to the Communications Building are available in the Norwich Archives.
