🚨 Did you know the AUP is a pathway to a Coast Guard commission?

The Auxiliary University Program (AUP) develops college students into well-trained officer candidates ready for a wide range of Coast Guard careers—from Surface & Air Operations, Environmental Protection, and Marine Science, to Legal, Engineering, Humanitarian Assistance, and Homeland Security. All this without committing to ROTC!

Through hands-on training, leadership mentorship, and internship placements, AUP students gain real Coast Guard experience while completing the Program of Study.
With the Coast Guard looking to commission 500 new officers each year, AUP is striving to provide the remaining officer candidates needed to serve. 🌊⚓

to our Spring 2025 Auxiliary Training Exercise (ATX) at U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York.

AUP students from the Norwich University Auxiliary University Program (AUP) had the opportunity to shadow Sector NY Marine Safety Technicians (MSTs), serving as break-ins during a foreign vessel examination in Bayonne, New Jersey. The team conducted a comprehensive inspection of vessel documentation, certifications, and required safety equipment.

AUP students also responded independently to reports of discrepancies aboard a South Korean–flagged vessel, performing their own detailed examination. This included reviewing licenses, logs, and compliance records, as well as inspecting critical systems throughout the ship—from the control room and electrical spaces to fire detection systems and the five-story engine room. They verified auxiliary steering, CO₂ systems, navigation equipment, and lifeboat readiness to ensure full safety and regulatory compliance.

Hands-on experience like this prepares AUP students for real-world Coast Guard marine safety operations.

Throwback Tuesday ⚓️

In Spring 2024, the AUP Unit of Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Norwich University AUP collaborated during our 2024 Spring Auxiliary Training Exercise (ATX).

After introductions, a brief campus tour, and dinner on the mess deck, cadets moved to the Mass Maritime Emergency Operations Training Center to conduct a Search & Rescue exercise. The scenario was developed by Mass Maritime AUP 2023–2024 Unit Leader Mitch Campbell, who now serves as an Ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard at Sector Miami.

This Search & Rescue exercise focused on Coast Guard units and assets around Cape Cod responding to a chemical tanker in distress. The scenario provided an excellent opportunity for MMA and Norwich cadets to collaborate, apply operational knowledge, and demonstrate different leadership styles in high-stress situations.

The Auxiliary University Program (AUP) provides hands-on training experiences that directly translate to real-world active duty Coast Guard operations. Collaborative training events like this ATX are essential to the success of AUP units, strengthening teamwork, leadership, and operational readiness across institutions.

Overall, it was a valuable and rewarding training experience for all involved.

Highlighting AUP Internships with Norwich University's AUP

Norwich University’s U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP) provides students with hands-on Coast Guard internships. AUP students intern alongside active duty, reserve, and auxiliary members at air stations, boat stations, sectors, cutters, bases, and flotillas.

At these internships, students earn operational qualifications such as boat crew, radio watch stander, vessel examiner, air observer, and more — gaining real-world experience in Coast Guard missions and leadership without the commitment of a traditional ROTC program.
