More than 3000 known species of marine molluscs call the Great Barrier Reef home. The molluscs group includes cuttlefish, clams 🐚, oysters, squid, octopus 🐙, nautilus, nudibranchs, chitons and snails 🐌. Cuttlefish, like the one pictured, have an internal shell - the cuttlebone - which is used for control of bouyancy.

More podcasting from our instructors! This time Andrew takes us through his path as a scientist, exciting shark stories, and plenty of valuable life advice. Definitely worth listening to even if you are not planning to become a marine biologist (though it may change your mind)!

Lots of scientists have stories about working in the field and a multitude of small to significant fails. There is a twitter thread that logs these stories; always a good idea to put safety first!

From snake bites to hijacked animal traps, here are some of the horrific and hilarious stories from scientists working with animals in the field.

"Tales from the South: sharks and rays of the South Pacific and the Great Barrier Reef"

Dr. Andrew Chin is a fisheries and shark scientist at James Cook University in Australia, on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef. He's always been fascinated with sharks and rays, and especially the more cryptic, lesser-known species that people don't know about. The sharks you won't see on TV but are perhaps (he thinks) much more interesting and fascinating! Andrew's lab focuses on the sharks and rays Great Barrier Reef and the South Pacific, whether it's tagging hammerheads in the Great Barrier Reef, working with Aboriginal rangers to find 'river sharks' and species that - according to science - don't occur in their rivers, chasing sawfish and river sharks in Papua New Guinea, or helping tag tiger sharks in New Caledonia. He's currently working on a big project that aims to build species lists of sharks and rays for every country in the Pacific.

Andy Dehart has more than 25 years of experience in animal care at several major public aquariums throughout North America. About two weeks ago the USA 60 Minutes program highlighted research efforts to understand great white shark behavior, migration and habitats along the NE coast of North America. https://www.cbs.com/shows/60_minutes/video/KbYus6QTEd_ccA55OydgB1eYQAECFtuT/shark-devours-a-seal-researchers-show-how-sharks-are-tagged-in-60-minutes-report/

They also did not air a be “shark smart” piece that rightfully put the onus on humans rather than these organisms. https://www.cbs.com/shows/60_minutes/video/c43ULOi3tnw5hwasXYSLynp0FciKbFop/how-to-be-shark-smart-at-cape-cod/

The followed up with a map of the tagged animals this past week.

More sharks are being spotted near beaches in the North Atlantic Ocean, some just feet from the shoreline. Bill Whitaker reports on why the sharks are swimming so close and how scientists are tracking them.
