Cadets take a trip to Italy to attend the International Forum on Peace, Security, and Prosperity, and reflect on the trip and the educational experiences.

On May 11th, 1970, Norwich University cadet James Jacobellis left the mess hall and lowered the flag to half staff. It was a week after the Ohio National Guard killed four students protesting the Vietnam war Kent State University, and a former military sciences professor, Major George Hussey, had just been killed in Cambodia.

The lowering of the flag is now known as the "Flagpole Incident", which saw hundreds of students from the campus gather around Jackman Hall, some wanting the flag raised, others wanting to voice their concerns to the school's administrators.

The school canceled classes for the rest of the day and President Barksdale Hamlett addressed the student body and agreed to hold an open forum for the students to voice their concerns about the state of the war and their ability to voice their views.

Congratulations to Victoria Jarvis, one of three students chosen for this year's Richard S. Schultz '60 Symposium Fellowship! We look forward to seeing your research presentation in the fall.

The Richard S. Schultz ’60 Symposium Fellowship was established in 2017 as an endowed fund in honor of “Dick” by his wife of 50 years, Myrna L. Schultz, their children, Marni and Alan, his classmates, and friends.

The fellowship enables Norwich undergraduates, from any academic discipline, the opportunity to pursue areas of inquiry and experiences that will promote and expand their understanding of the past and how it impacts the present and future. Through research, travel, and inquiry, the Schultz Fellow and faculty advisor will offer perspectives for us to face the future with a better understanding and confidence.

Join us (or send your students)!

Step outside and make the outdoors your classroom.
The Partridge School of Outdoor Learning reflects Norwich’s long-standing commitment to experiential learning — combining intellectual inquiry, physical engagement, and applied academic work in Vermont’s landscapes. Rooted in Alden Partridge’s belief in developing “a sound mind in a sound body,” the Outdoor School brings classroom academics into the field, where ideas are tested, skills are applied, and leadership is lived.

This is hands-on, credit-bearing coursework for students who want to learn by doing — who want to engage directly with the environment, not just read about it.

A return to Partridge's vision of experiential education. In the field. In community.

Your Classroom Is Vermont.
