Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for the Cerritos College Alumni/Student Mixer with Rick Rodriguez, 45th Mayor of Downey.

John B. Smith believed in learning by doing and in leaving things better than he found them. Though he lived a modest and largely private life, his legacy lives on at Cerritos College.

It stands prominently etched not only on wooden plaques beside well-worn machines, but in the lives of students whose futures have been and will continue to be shaped by his extraordinary generosity.

Last week, we hosted our Alumni/Student Mixer featuring Cerritos College alumna Brenda Duran ’02, Director of External Affairs at the LA County Justice, Care, and Opportunities Department (JCOD).

It was an inspiring evening that began with welcoming remarks from President Dr. Fierro. Brenda then traced her journey from editor-in-chief of Talon Marks, our student-run news publication, to leading communications for multiple LA County departments.

The evening concluded with an engaging Q&A and key takeaways: embrace the unexpected turns in your career and say “yes!” to new opportunities—you never know where they might lead.

Born in Cairo, Egypt, Hemat earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Science in International Marketing before immigrating to the U.S. in 2009. Despite her qualifications and over 15 years of experience, she struggled to find employment in her field.

After facing personal hardships in Georgia, including an abusive marriage, a visit to her sister in California became a turning point. While it wasn’t easy — facing a colon cancer diagnosis after a divorce and custody battle — Hemat remained determined to rebuild her life.

That’s when she found Cerritos College, and everything changed.

to an unforgettable Alumni/Student Mixer back in January! We were honored to hear from Nazih Yehya, Cerritos College alumnus and Foundation Board Chair. As a Financial Advisor with Eagle Strategies LLC, Investment Adviser Representative with , and founder of Blue Cedar Financial and Insurance Solutions, Nazih shared his journey from immigrant to financial expert.

Nearly 20 years later, he remains driven by his passion for helping employees and business owners secure their financial future.
