The Pantry at NCC

The Pantry at NCC The Pantry seeks to alleviate the barriers and challenges associated with food insecurity so that students can remain in school and succeed.

Many students have voiced concern to various faculty and staff members on campus regarding their economic situation. Obtaining an adequate food supply is often a major component of the financial stress that students bear. Food insecurity has increasingly become an issue on college and university campuses across the country with some data showing 39 – 59% of college student experience food insecuri

ty. Research has shown that the rates of food insecure community college students exceed the national average which has a negative effect on student GPA, levels of energy, and concentration. The NCC Food Pantry will seek to alleviate the barriers and challenges associated with food insecurity and hunger so that students can remain in school, and ultimately, earn their degrees. While there are community resources available, it may be difficult to access them due to transportation or scheduling. Also, sometimes community food resources are not able to accommodate students based on their eligibility guidelines. By bringing a food supply to the NCC campus, it eliminates some of the barriers students may face when accessing outside sources.

James Cramer knows what it’s like be to a hungry kid in need of a summer meal when school’s closed. He wants fewer kids to have to face that reality....

Dear Members & Volunteers:

All good things must come to an end. Today will be my last official day here at the Pantry and, frankly, I will miss it terribly. You have all made my life so special and I'm inspired every day by the members and volunteers that grace my life. Thank you!

On my final day I wanted to send out some positivity to you all. Keep working towards your goals. Every day is a new opportunity to take a step forward. We have all (myself included) stumbled or stopped to rest, but keep looking towards your future and know that every step, no matter how small, gets you closer to the finish line.

Because of the Pantry, I am dedicating some time to try and push for Pantries in each of our 17 colleges and universities here in Connecticut. I'm calling it 17x20 - 17 colleges by 2020 - which, coincidentally, is when the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities system would like to unite into one system. Mine is a major endeavor and may not be fully executed due to lack of funding, but as many of you know, I don't take "no" well. I will be looking for funding in the coming weeks and months. To that end, if I could trouble any of you to write a letter of support regarding how the Pantry has helped you in achieving your academic goals that would be great (those that have graduated or transferred, this includes you). Here is the link: http://bit.ly/29xxioD

I also wanted to give all members and volunteers a chance to give advise to our next years' VISTA. She will start on Wednesday, July 13th. I have left her a ton of notes and will meet with her to do some training, but your advise is always great to have. It's completely anonymous and will only take a second to do... http://bit.ly/VistaAdvise

I have a volunteer coming in for pantry hours on Monday (10a-1p)and Tuesday (11a-2p) will be covered by our intern so the Pantry will not be interrupted for normal operations.

If you want to give some general feedback, this link will be passed along to the new VISTA. I have enjoyed reading and learning from all you have said. Stay involved and help the Pantry become even better! http://bitly.com/PantryFeedback

I want to publicly thank Courtney for all her guidance and support of all my crazy ideas and for being an outstanding boss-woman. She is more than my supervisor, she is my partner-in-crime and friend, and I will miss seeing her and sharing her office.

I adore you all! Best of luck and keep on your paths...one step at a time!

xoxo,
Shannon

"40 percent of all the food produced in the United States is thrown away. That costs American consumers and businesses $160 billion a year — which works out to about $125 a month for a family of four"

Wow....simply, WOW!

Have you ever gotten into an argument about whether a carton of eggs are still good even though the date on the label has passed? It's happened in our households and we bet it's happened in yours.
