We are once again grateful to Mike Donnelly and Bob Abrams of Green Township VFW Post 10380 for their continued support of our Center. Post 10380’s generous $3,000 donation will us further our mission to care for and support all 370+ of our military-affiliated students.

Pictured with our Director, Glenn Welling, this gift is a powerful reminder of the strength of the bonds found in community and service.

What a night at Cintas Center! Last weekend, we had the honor of recognizing those who serve and have served at our Military Appreciation Game. One of the most powerful moments of the night? Watching several young men and women take their oath of enlistment at halftime, committing to serve in all branches of the military. 🇺🇸

A huge shoutout to Xavier’s ROTC cadets for their support throughout the evening and to Total Quality Logistics for providing the massive American flag that draped the court—it was truly a sight to see!

At Xavier, we’re proud to celebrate and support our military-affiliated students and community members. This event is just one way we show our appreciation, and we couldn’t have done it without the energy of Xavier Nation!

Yesterday, at the Inter-University Council Military-Connected Student Symposium at the Ohio Statehouse, Xavier University was honored to receive recognition from the National Veterans Leadership Foundation for excellence in programming supporting our military-affiliated students.

The award was presented to Scott Clyde, Vice President of Strategic Enrollment Management, and Glenn Welling, Director of the Veteran and Military Family Center, who proudly represented Xavier at the event. The symposium brought together lawmakers, higher education leaders, and experts to discuss the best ways to support those who have served and their families.

With over 386 military-affiliated students on campus, Xavier remains committed to providing the highest level of support through our Veteran and Military Family Center and its dedicated staff. We are proud to be recognized for our efforts and will continue striving to make Xavier a welcoming and supportive home for our military community.

A huge shout out to retired Navy Captain John (JJ) McGinn for once again hosting Xavier staff, alumni and supporters at the DePaul game in Chicago this past weekend. JJ, Justin Hsu and I served together in Iraq in 2008-2009 and we were joined at the game by retired Rear Admiral John Mumaw and retired Navy Commander Fred Webber. It was a wonderful afternoon and a huge Xavier win (see 21 point lead on the scoreboard!). Thanks to all who joined us!

We have had an incredible week serving our Veteran Community (past, current and future) here at Xavier!

Beginning last Saturday, our Veteran and Military Family Center hosted a team from Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown’s office who conducted Service Academy interviews for 22 candidates interested in attending the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, United States Military Academy (West Point), or the Merchant Marine Academy.

On Monday, we had the honor of hosting two events. We began with a Dedication Ceremony of our Conference Room in memory of 2008 Xavier graduate, Emily Barbero. Emily’s parents, retired Lieutenant General Michael Barbero and his wife Linda, along with several other family members were joined by Xavier staff and students for the event. The Dedication Ceremony was then immediately followed by our annual Veteran Appreciation luncheon which was culminated by the Marine Corps birthday cake cutting facilitated by our very own Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management, and Marine F/A-18 pilot, Scott Clyde. Semper Fi!

The grand finale was our annual Veteran Appreciation Basketball game on Tuesday evening where we were able to honor all those Veterans in attendance, including members of VFW Post 10380. Thanks to U.S. Air Force Captain Wes Green who sang the National Anthem and the Color Guard from the United States Marine Corps Communications Company, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division. We also received a check on the court at halftime in the amount of $15,000 from the Hamilton County Veterans Service Commission (VSC) which will go directly toward our efforts to recruit transitioning military members to Xavier. Thank you VSC Commissioner Richard Headen!

Xavier University and our Veteran and Military Family Center are proud to announce that we have been awarded the EmpowerVetEd Grant for $150,000! This significant grant from the Ohio Department of Education Workforce Empower VetEd program will allow us to expand our support and resources for veteran students and their families. Our commitment to serving those who have served remains stronger than ever, and this funding will help us continue to make a meaningful impact.

Attached are photos of Glenn Welling, Director of the Veteran and Military Family Center, alongside Dr. Laney Bender-Slack and Dr. Brett Burton, representing our Department of Education.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a role in this achievement, and to our veterans and military-affiliated students – this is for you. Stay tuned for more updates on how this will benefit our Xavier community!
