As of this week, the permanent art installation from the "My First Patient: Anatomical Donor Gratitude Ceremony" was hung for display. This art installation is made up of messages of gratitude from the students to their donors and paper cranes that were folded to represent hope, healing, peace, and longevity. The large art piece in the middle of the collage was made by Zuha Nasim (M1) and is called "For My Donor."

Inspiration for this piece comes from an ancient tradition in Japan. In Japanese folklore, it is believed if one folds 1,000 cranes, they will be granted a wish. This practice is called senbazuru and has become a symbol of hope and healing in challenging times. Today, folding paper cranes honors the deceased, support the grieving, and promote peace. HMSOM's Anatomical Donor Ceremony Advisory Group folds paper cranes to remember our donors and show our gratitude. We hope that this art instalation starts an annual tradition that future cohorts will join in an create more perminant art installations.

ICYMI - This year’s Bonita F. Stanton Visiting Professor gave our entire school much to think about last week. Philipp D. Levy, M.D., MPH, a former colleague of Dr. Stanton at Wayne State University, joined us for a day-plus of discussion and deliberation - and much in the way of learning. Dr. Levy’s keynote, “Embracing Disruption to Improve Health Outcomes,” is the latest in The Amabile Family Lecture Series.

Dr. Levy’s insights drew on his considerable experience as Edward S. Thomas Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine, Associate Vice President for Population and Transitional Sciences at Wayne State, and health director for the Mobile Health Unit Program at Wayne Health. Some of his insights included: a 20-year push to investigate high-dose nitroglycerin for use in acute heart failure, and the possible use of AI in health care. We were glad to host him, and hear him.

It was an insightful and engaging discussion at the recent 27th HMH Bioethics Institute Symposium, "Ethics at the Interface: The Future of AI in Healthcare."
The event hosted a panel of HMH clinical, legal, and data science thought leaders as they tackled the complex ethical, legal, and clinical questions surrounding AI’s role in healthcare.
While cautiously optimistic as to AI’s potential for aiding in patient care, they emphasized the need for thoughtful, real-world implementation that preserves the humanistic core of medicine. Read more in the write-up here:

We’re proud to announce that Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine has received approval from the New Jersey Presidents’ Council to offer an innovative Master of Medical Sciences / M.D. dual degree.

This program is designed to cultivate the next generation of physician-scientists by integrating rigorous research training with the clinical curriculum. Participants will spend an additional year in a research lab while completing coursework in translational science, biomedical methods, and grant writing, culminating in an original research thesis.

This streamlined, cost-effective pathway uniquely bridges discovery and patient care—leveraging Hackensack Meridian Health’s 18-hospital network and Center for Discovery and Innovation to give students access to cutting-edge research and clinical resources.

Applications for the inaugural cohort will open soon, with classes set to begin Summer 2026. Learn more:
