So, one of the cool things about NHS is the field trips!

NHS Botany students toured the Jepson and University Herbaria, led by Nina House and Saskia Raether. During the visit, they learned that the herbarium houses over 2.2 million specimens! 😯

They examined historic collections from notable figures including Alice Eastwood, John Muir, and William Brewer, discovered ongoing efforts to image specimens and sample their DNA, and got a peek at the beautiful algae collections.

To wrap up the trip, students practiced mounting specimens they collected from around campus!🌱🍂🍃🪾🌼🍄🌾🪻🪷

Hola !! here's a little update for y'all -- Urban Agroecology class with Professor Debbie Harris is in full swing, and the garden is in total transformation mode! Every Tuesday after lecture, students roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty, and learn firsthand at our educational farm.

p.s. the sunflowers are absolutely thriving (and are so beautiful!), collectively we are struggling to chop them down in preparation for our fall garden. 🥲🌻

Hola Merritt students 🌿 the Environmental Center is bursting with life this time of year! if you're curious about what’s growing, stop by the Basic Needs Center in R028 where we regularly donate our seasonal harvest.

(If you go tomorrow, you'll find apples from our apple tree, ground cherries, rosemary, basil, mint, lemon cucumbers, and the cutest little carrots & chilis!) ✨🌱🥕🥬🍎💐🍅✨

Thank you to everyone who came out to help in the Environmental Center garden! It was a wonderful mixture of former students, current students and workshop attendees ✨ Our reward was laughter, tender new potatoes, lemons and lots of basil 🥔🍋🌿

🌱 The Environmental Center is bursting with life! 🌱

Current, former, and wannabe NHS students are invited to come help harvest, w**d, and maintain our garden.

📅 When: Friday, June 26
⏰ Time: 1:30–3:30 PM (stay as little or as long as you like!)

📍 Where: The Environmental Center, up the hill to the left of Parking Lot E (currently closed for construction)

Come get your hands in the soil, connect with fellow students, and help keep our garden thriving. We hope to see you there! 🌿💚

More than a chance to be mindful in nature, our weekend workshop with the amazing Saumitra Kelkar .bio was a lesson on how to use our senses to fully connect to what is in our natural environments as well as what is missing or hidden, and ecosystems.✨ When we slow down we can hear more birds, identify insects by their flight pattern and understand how water flow and sunlight affect plants. 🌞🌿

Thank you Saumitra and all the wonderful people who came and embraced the experience! It was a fantastic way to end our workshop series 🪄
