BATTI Workshop 2020 was a great success! Over 20 teachers and administrators from the BATTI alum world and beyond joined facilitators Hannah Acevedo and Sarah Wheeler on Saturday, February 8 for a full morning of conversation, discovery, and connection around positive behavior supports and classroom management.

BATTI has a bright future! Here's Bob making our partnership with Holy Names University official, as Dr. Sheila Smith-Mckoy, HNU's Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, looks on. Starting in June 2020, our next cohort of BATTI Residents will enroll at Holy Names in a combined MAT and Credential program. Go Hawks!

We had two fantastic graduations last week! Our third Ed Leadership group celebrated at the Chinese American International School, and "BATTI Classic" gathered at the Children's Day School. And on Saturday a good group "walked" on stage at UOP in Stockton. Congratulations to the new Master's and credential candidates.

I highly recommend Heartland by Sarah Smarsh, a memoir about her upbringing on farms and in small cities in Kansas. As they did for Tara Westover of Educated, schools and great teachers brought Sarah out of her limited world and gave her a different idea of how she could live her life.
Sarah says this about teachers:

How Can Private Schools Contribute To the Public Good?

BATTI believes in the nation-wide effort of private schools joining together for a public purpose. We loved this story on KQED this morning about the inspiring Horizons program at the San Francisco Friends School. We are proud that BATTI residents and graduates have served as teachers at Horizons since the very first year!

As the new school year approaches, BATTI celebrates teachers standing up for their community in the Bay and beyond. Jahana Hayes (Connecticut Teacher of the Year, 2016) and Tony Evers (Wisconsin Superintendent) shine a light on education issues as they pursue new paths in politics.

Forty BATTI students are out in Summer schools now. They are assisting mentor teachers and in many cases lead teaching themselves. We thank our partners including Aim High, the Partners Program at the College Prep School, Springboard Collaborative (OUSD), and the Argonne School. In a win-win situation, BATTI students practice their chops and find their voice, while stemming summer learning loss with a diverse group of students.

The Larger Concerns Behind the Teachers' Strikes

Teachers have it easy---yeah, right. Except for the fact that they are underpaid, overworked, and pay for lots of classroom expenses out of pocket. WE SALUTE TEACHERS IN OKLAHOMA, KENTUCKY, ARIZONA WHO ARE STRIKING AND GETTING THEIR LEGISLATORS ATTENTION.

For educators in Oklahoma and other states, the demands go far beyond better pay.

Our first ever STEAM night was a great success! Cohort 16 students cut, mixed, designed, measured, computed, drew, theorized, and reflected. They came away with great ideas for integrating art into math and science in their future classrooms. Workshop leaders Judy Gilson, Debby Roosevelt, Kate Philpott, Aaron Moorhead, and Ned Diamond led the five engaging stations. Thanks to SF Day for hosting this dynamic class!

Thanks to the magic of Marty Conrad, we had a very successful Alumni Literacy Workshop last Saturday. One prospective student, one current student, and 10 alumni enjoyed Marty's surprising reading and writing lesson, disguised as a fun science lesson. WE WILL DO THIS AGAIN!

The final information session for our Teaching Credential program is next Tuesday, Feb 6 at the SF Day. And the application deadline for that program is Feb 9. Now is the time to get yourself in gear to learn about and apply for this great opportunity to get a Master's and credential while working at a valuable teaching apprenticeship!

December and January are BATTI arts months. Cohorts 15 and 16 rocked their Art, Music, and Drama classes at the SF School this week. We are lucky to have their great teachers help us INTEGRATE the ARTS!
