Do you have your tickets for WOBO's community movie screening yet? On Sunday, September 20th, we'll be hosting a screening of"The Street Project", which shares the stories of safe streets advocates in Arizona and New York. The documentary is the story about humanity’s relationship to the streets and the global citizen-led fight to make communities safer.

We're excited to be joined by D3 Councilmember Fife, who will welcome attendees and provide opening remarks. After the screening, WOBO President Chris Hwang will host a discussion with safe streets advocates Tonya Love and Carter Lavin.

We will discuss the roots of traffic violence and how Oakland plays host to some of the most effective advocacy for safe streets. Your ticket buys you entry and popcorn. The New Parkway also sells beverages and other food for purchase. You may pay it forward by purchasing a ticket for other attendees.

The days are getting shorter, and it's important to see--and be seen as you're biking around Oakland. Stop by the Bike East Bay table at Fruitvale BART on September 2 from 4-6:30pm for a free bike light set and other bikey giveaways!

You’ll get a Planet Bike Spok 50 headlight and rear light set that are USB rechargeable, providing 2.5+ hours of light to make your rides at night safer! Bike East Bay staff will be onsite to answer any of your questions and tell you about upcoming events and activities.

Oakland residents ages 18+ can rent an e-bike for $20/month (income-qualified residents) or $120/month (standard rate).

You'll need:
• A valid government-issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
• A debit or credit card for the $250 refundable security deposit

Complete the registration survey and liability waiver (oaklandca.gov/ebike).
Check your email to schedule your pickup.

Over the weekend of June 27th, WOBO had a fantastic time hosting the final event in our Ride Like a Girl workshop series: the bike camping trip! We welcomed 23 campers, who chose to ride 9, 30, or 45 miles to Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont.

Ride leaders helped campers navigate, take breaks, and stop along the way to pick up ingredients for dinner and breakfast. For most of the participants, it was their first time bike camping! We are so grateful to have had so many folks join us for this educational event.

Did you know that Saturday, August 1st is Public Transit Night at the Oakland Ballers
game? Join WOBO for a night out at the game, and root on the Ballers with us on the first-base line! Come support our work to make Oakland streets safer for all users, and get a $25 discounted ticket to enjoy the game. Plus, we will be tabling at the pre-game block party at Raimondi Park, which begins an hour before the game. Come say hello and learn about our work on programs like Community-Led Traffic Calming, which helps residents suggest changes to intersections to make them safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

There are no permanent bike shops between Laurel Cyclery and San Leandro--but the Oakland Public Library is on a mission to change this. Every Wednesday and Friday at two different OPL Branches, library mechanics teach community members how to repair their own bikes by providing parts, tools, and guidance.

The Bike Fix began in 2014 as a collaboration between OPL and the The Original Scraper Bike Team, and since then, has developed into a regular community gathering. This resource is funded by the Oakland Department of Transportation and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland.

Find the Bike Fix on Wednesdays at the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch, and on Fridays at the 81st Ave Library Branch. Both sessions are from 2:30-5 PM. Bring a bike in need of repair, and the Bike Fix Mechanics can get you rolling again!

Have you explored the San Leandro Creek Trail? Don't let its name confuse you--it is a trail in East Oakland, meant to transform the creek from a place of dumping and other unwanted activities to a community asset where Deep East Oakland residents can access quality green space, as well as biking and pedestrian trails.

The Trail has been planned--and funded--to stretch 1.2 miles from Sobrante Park to Hegenberger Road, creating a connection to the Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline. However, due to reluctance from the Union Pacific Railroad to grant right of way, only part of the trail has been constructed. Plus, on either side of the Trail, crosswalks still need to be cut and painted! This is especially needed at Hegenberger Rd, where there is no convenient and safe way to cross six lanes of traffic.

To help this project proceed, find your Oakland City Council member at tinyurl.com/oakcouncil. Ask them to push the City's legal department to sign the license agreement with Alameda County — and to get those crosswalks cut and painted at 98th Ave and Hegenberger Rd! East Oakland residents shouldn't have to wait any longer for connected and beautiful natural spaces.

We're hosting our first "Plan It" bike camping workshop this evening at Sports Basement in Berkeley. Come by to meet our encouraging Ride Like a Girl leaders, like Jac! Learn about how to join our bike camping trip and discuss to plan a trip and adjust, customize, or swap your gear to have a comfortable ride.

Jac will be leading the longest bike camping route, but three route lengths are available during the trip from June 27-28 at Coyote Hills Park.

Attending one of the "Plan It" workshops, either June 2nd or 7th, is required to attending the bike camping trip with WOBO at the end of June. To sign up or get more information, visit wobo.org/rlag26/.
