Hooking student research into real-world impact 🔬🌱
Academic research meets community activism! Weber State student Sadie Dunn spent her summer in Atlanta at Georgia State University conducting practical field research through the Community-Soil-Air-Water (CSAW) REU program.
Working directly alongside local residents, Sadie collected ambient air quality data using low-cost mobile sensors to track fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and TVOCs in a neighborhood near a paint manufacturing facility.
How her research made a difference:
📊 Correlated peak pollution levels with morning traffic patterns
🌬 Used wind rose meteorological modeling to map chemical v***r movements into residential areas
💡 Established vital baseline data to help advocate for long-term air monitoring.

While they seem content soaking up the warmth for now, many of these birds will soon take off for their annual journey south.

From a zoological perspective, migration isn't just about escaping cold weather—it's driven by complex biological triggers:

Photoperiod Sensitivity: Decreasing daylight exposure affects the brain's pineal gland and pituitary system, initiating seasonal changes in behavior and metabolism.

Hormonal & Physiological Shifts: Shorter days trigger hormonal surges that induce zugunruhe (migratory restlessness) and prompt intense foraging to store crucial fat reserves.

Why do some cancer cells respond to treatment while others survive and adapt? ☀
In Dr. Gennie Parkman’s lab, the team studies melanoma to answer this vital question. By examining genetic alterations and cell signaling pathways, the lab works to uncover how cancer cells build resistance and how to develop smarter, more effective therapies.

With Utah facing one of the highest rates of melanoma in the nation, this research directly impacts our community. Today, the Parkman's Lab is expanding into cancer immunology and collaborating with partners across campus, including Dr. Bowman’s hepatocellular carcinoma group, to explore how the immune microenvironment shapes treatment response.
Collaboration drives science forward, allowing teams to tackle complex questions together.

🍂Fall is upon us!🍁

Solidago - While they can flower throughout the growing season, goldenrods are often a conspicuous sign that autumn is here. The sprays of flowers at the top of the plants certainly show the reason the plant has its name. Goldenrods are in the same plant family as sunflowers, another common feature of this time of the year. We have many plant specimens of this family, Asteraceae, in the Mary Carver Hall Herbarium at Weber State University.

Malus - It's the time of year when we're craving apple pie, and this specimen, tea crabapple, is a relative of the domesticated apple. There are many different varieties of the apple we eat, and almost 40 species in the apple genus (aka Malus) across the world. We house many specimens of this genus and its relatives in the Rose family in the Mary Carver Hall Herbarium.

It is with heavy hearts that the College of Science shares the passing of our beloved colleague, Dr. James “Jim” Moore, who passed away peacefully at home on September 16, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Jim joined the Weber Science team in 2020 and was a deeply valued member of our community, known not only for his work as an educator and Pre-Medical Professions advisor but also for his warm spirit and commitment to student success. Before his work in higher education and student advisement, Jim led a distinguished career as a vocal coach, music professor, and professional singer.

Above all, Jim was an inspiration to those around him—a devoted family man, mentor, and steadfast advocate for students as they pursued their dreams. His mentorship, kindness, and presence will be profoundly missed by colleagues, students, and friends alike.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jim’s wife, Paula, his children, grandchildren, and his entire family.

How do prescribed fires impact soil health and plant-parasitic organism populations?

Olivia Austed’s research experience at the Morton Arboretum near Chicago, IL, provided her with hands-on training in the Plant Pathology Lab at the Center for Tree Science.

She conducted a study analyzing soil samples from burned and unburned sites, extracting microscopic nematodes to classify them by trophic level and evaluate their role as bioindicators of post-fire ecosystem recovery.

During this internship, Olivia mastered specialized laboratory and microscopy techniques, identifying anatomical features—such as mouthparts, cuticles, and organ placement—to map how soil invertebrate communities respond to environmental disturbance.

Her research revealed that routinely burned areas hosted a higher abundance of plant-parasitic nematodes, likely due to a richer, more herbaceous post-fire plant community that provides greater food availability.

Undergraduate field and laboratory research enables students to gain specialized technical expertise, understand intricate belowground ecological relationships, and prepare for impactful careers in plant pathology and conservation.
