Note-taking for Consecutive Interpreting: Enhancing Your Technique
By Gabriela Siebach, CMI, CCI

Omissions are one of the most common errors in consecutive interpreting and often occur when information is not fully processed or remembered. This hands-on introductory session will teach practical note-taking strategies to help interpreters capture and organize key information, improve memory retention, and deliver more accurate interpretations. Participants will practice these techniques using real-life scenarios, including witness testimony.

Will AI take your job? The Future of Legal Translation and Interpreting
by Christina Green, CCI, CT

As AI and large language models become increasingly sophisticated, many future linguists wonder whether technology will replace them. This presentation explores that question in the high-stakes world of legal translation and court interpreting, where accuracy, ethics, cultural awareness, and human judgment are essential. Using three key comparisons, we will examine what human linguists bring to legal settings that AI cannot reliably replicate. The session will also consider how AI can serve as a useful tool for terminology research and preparation while highlighting strategies students can use to build a successful, future-ready career in legal language services.

Our students gave a fantastic poster presentation today and will be presenting again tomorrow at the annual Utah Translators & Interpreters Association (UTIA) conference! 🎉

The students are part of our Japanese program and are presenting on a translation project they are working on in collaboration with the Ogden Buddhist Church and with the guidance of Tomono Sensei. It’s wonderful to see their language skills, translation expertise, and community engagement come together in such a fascinating project that sheds light on the Japanese history and heritage of the Ogden community.

If you’re attending the conference, come support them tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. in the Student Union Mezzanine!
