Investing in our residents is investing in the future of surgery.

Our 2026 OU Surgery Leadership Retreat brought residents together for a day of leadership development, team building, and reflection. Thanks to the incredible support and flexibility of our faculty, staff, and clinical teams, every resident was able to step away from clinical responsibilities and fully participate in this valuable experience.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the retreat a success, especially Berta Orta and Terrysa Nguyen for their coordination and support. We are grateful for everyone who contributed to a day dedicated to fostering the next generation of surgical leaders.🙂

🎉 Dr. Suhair Maqusi has been promoted to Full Professor, recognizing her sustained excellence, leadership, and commitment to academic surgery.

Today was the annual OU Health Roxie M. Albrecht Trauma Symposium, where we were proud to participate alongside visiting professor Brian J. Eastridge from UT Health San Antonio.

Thank you, Dr. Eastridge, for sharing your powerful experiences as a deployed military surgeon and your perspective as Division Chief of Trauma and Emergency Surgery—offering insight into leading trauma teams in high-pressure environments, delivering care in austere settings, and advancing battlefield medicine.

The symposium is ongoing until 4:00 PM today in the Samis Family Education Center—feel free to stop by and join us if you have time!

Our Department of Surgery had the opportunity to participate in the OKC Youth Medical Mentorship Summit—giving students a hands-on look at what a future in medicine can be.

And no, it wasn’t for the faint of heart… surgical skills were practiced (on bananas 🍌).

Huge thank you to our residents—Heather Grubbs, Abigail Roberts, Chris Luschen, Ryan Bynum, and Marianne Kimmell—for showing up and making a lasting impact. The work you do outside the hospital speaks volumes, and those students will carry this experience with them for years to come.

Honored to see this work recognized by News 9 in “How Medical Professionals Are Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthcare Workers.”
