What does a scholarship make possible?

More time to focus on research.

More freedom to pursue meaningful field experiences.

More opportunity to serve communities.

And, perhaps most importantly, one less barrier between a student and the future they’re working toward.

At the Hudson College of Public Health, 40 students recently received more than $100,000 in scholarship support through 31 donor-created and donor-funded scholarships.

At the college’s 16th annual Scholarship Appreciation Ceremony, we had the opportunity to celebrate both sides of that impact: the students preparing to take on some of our most complex public health challenges and the donors who believe deeply enough in their potential to invest in what comes next.

To our scholarship recipients, congratulations. And to the alumni, faculty, families and community partners who make these opportunities possible: thank you for investing not only in our students, but in the future of public health.

We're proud to share Emily McDaniel, MPH, a senior program evaluation coordinator in the Hudson College of Public Health, was recently named a 2026 NextGen Under 30 winner in the Policy and Public Service category.

Her work combines data, collaboration and a commitment to service to help strengthen programs and improve health outcomes across the state of Oklahoma.

Dr. Mark Woodring, assistant professor in the Department of Health Administration and Policy at the OU Hudson College of Public Health, presented “The Smile Gap: What Rural Oklahoma Reveals About Community Readiness for Dental Therapy” at the American Dental Therapy Association Annual Conference yesterday, August 10th.

Woodring brought 25 years of experience addressing health disparities in rural and underserved communities through health care leadership, public policy and community-engaged research. His presentation highlighted practical, community-informed approaches to expanding access to care and improving health outcomes for populations facing persistent barriers.

This summer, NARCH scholars conducted mentored research focused on improving Native health and presented their findings at Cherokee Nation Research Day alongside students from across the health education pipeline. Meet Toluwanimi M. Oni, PhD, MPH—an HCOPH alum advancing research that helps protect communities from environmental health risks.

What began as an interest sparked during a health and safety course grew into a passion for understanding how environmental exposures impact human health—both inside and outside the workplace.

“My training encouraged me to think creatively to offer solutions to environmental health challenges.”

Through hands-on research, fieldwork, grant writing, and laboratory experience, Toluwanimi built the skills needed to assess environmental hazards and develop meaningful solutions. During the program, he secured three pilot project grants and contributed to three scientific publications—experiences that continue to shape his work today.

Now serving as an Assistant Professor of Research at the Hudson College of Public Health, his research focuses on reducing exposure to environmental toxicants linked to respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases.

His advice to future students? If you’re passionate about protecting workers and vulnerable communities, environmental health offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Congratulations to Dr. Cassandra Querdibitty, assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion Sciences at the OU Hudson College of Public Health, on being selected as a 2026 Health Disparities Research Institute Scholar by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities!

This prestigious, competitive program recognizes outstanding early-career researchers whose work is advancing minority health and health disparities research. As a scholar, Dr. Querdibitty will participate in an intensive week at the NIH, where she'll receive advanced training, mentorship from NIH scientific leaders, opportunities to build interdisciplinary collaborations, and guidance to strengthen future NIH grant applications.
