A new publication in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology highlights the ongoing research collaboration between NYITCOM and St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center through the Research Scholars Program.

The study, “Photon-Counting Detector CT Reduces Calcium Overestimation Compared With Energy-Integrating Detector CT: Micro-CT Validation in Cadaveric Arteries,” demonstrated that photon-counting CT provides more accurate measurements of coronary calcium than conventional CT technology. Improved coronary calcium assessment can help physicians better diagnose heart disease, evaluate cardiovascular risk, and guide patient care.

As one of the first centers in the United States to implement photon-counting CT in clinical practice, St. Francis Hospital continues to advance innovation in cardiovascular imaging and research. This publication reflects the strength of the longstanding partnership between St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center and NYITCOM, providing medical students, faculty, and researchers with opportunities to contribute to impactful translational research.

Liat Jarkon, D.O., M.P.H., LFAPA, Director of the NYITCOM Center for Behavioral Health, was recently featured in a News 12 segment titled “Mentally Preparing for a Surgical Procedure.”

The segment emphasizes an important message for patients and providers alike: as individuals prepare for surgery, ensuring mental health readiness is just as critical as physical preparation. Dr. Jarkon explains the correlation between mental health and surgical outcomes, highlighting how psychological well-being can directly influence recovery and overall patient experience.

Adding to this meaningful experience, Dr. Jarkon brought NYITCOM student Sebastian El Ghaity-Beckley (Class of 2029) behind the scenes during filming, giving him firsthand exposure to medical communication in action and the role physicians play in public education.
