For Cynthia Cruz, Moot Court started as a required part of her 2L year, but it didn’t take long for her to discover how much she enjoyed it.

Cynthia especially loved the oral argument and public speaking side of the experience. Along the way, she learned how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses in an argument, adjust her approach and become more confident in her own voice.

“I have learned that I love to advocate. And that is a powerful strength to have.”

Now a 3L and member of the Moot Court Board, Cynthia is helping this year’s competitors have an experience of their own.

Last night, the Creighton School of Law community gathered for Red Mass, continuing a meaningful tradition rooted in faith, reflection and service.

Red Mass offers an opportunity for students, faculty, alumni and members of the legal community to come together and reflect on the vocation of law and the responsibility to pursue justice and serve the common good.

For 3L Keely Socha, Moot Court taught her something she’ll carry far beyond the courtroom: she is capable.

After a challenging first round, feedback from judges and attorneys helped Keely find her confidence and develop the ability to think quickly and articulate her arguments.

Now, as a member of the Moot Court Board, she hopes to help the next class of students discover that same confidence.

“Moot Court has taught me that I am capable. I can do hard things, and I can be good at them!”

Ryan J. Kirshenbaum, JD, brings his experience in healthcare law to Creighton’s Primary Care Conference Hawaii 2027.

As adjunct professor at the School of Law and associate general counsel for Children’s Nebraska, Kirshenbaum's work includes HIPAA, EMTALA, clinical research, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, to Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, complex physician employment and professional service arrangements, healthcare mergers and acquisitions. His experience navigating these complex legal and regulatory issues gives him a firsthand perspective on the challenges facing today’s healthcare professionals.

Kirshenbaum will share that perspective during the School of Law lecture at the conference on Feb.18 at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa in Ka'anapali.

What does the Constitution say about how petition circulators can be paid?

Professor Paul McGreal provided legal context for the Flatwater Free Press’ reporting on allegations of fraudulent signatures in several recent Nebraska petition drives.

McGreal explained that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that banning paid petition circulators is unconstitutional. However, the Court has not specifically ruled on whether states can prohibit paying circulators on a per-signature basis, leaving an important constitutional question for lower courts.

Petition-circulating firms made millions in Nebraska and promised workers quick money. Now, seven people from out of state have been arrested, even as almost all the petitions under investigation head to the ballot anyway.

“AI is an extremely fancy hammer, but you still have to know when and how hard to swing it.”

That was one takeaway from Kamron Hasan ‘14, Partner at Husch Blackwell, who joined students this week's in the AI Uses & Ethics course for a conversation about the opportunities and challenges of AI in the legal profession.

As AI continues to reshape the practice of law, knowing how to use the technology is only part of the equation. Lawyers also need the judgment to know when to use it, how to use it and when not to use it.
