🏀⚾ What does a baseball pitch have to do with artificial intelligence?
The University of Nebraska at Omaha has received National Science Foundation funding for SPARK-AI, an innovative project that uses sports science and real-world movement data to introduce middle school students to artificial intelligence.

Led by Dr. Brian Knarr from the Department of Biomechanics and the UNO’s Sports Medicine and Biomechanics Lab, the cross-campus team includes Dr. Tracie Reding, Dr. Aaron Likens, Dr. Paula Jakopovic, and Dr. Michelle Friend, bringing together expertise in biomechanics, AI, STEM education, and teacher preparation to create engaging, classroom-ready learning experiences.

Because the future of AI education might just start with a baseball pitch.

Meet one of our new faculty, Assistant Professor Farah Fallah Tafti!

🎓Academic/Research Background:
I completed my PhD in Biomechanics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and my bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in Biomedical Engineering. Between my master’s and PhD, I worked in orthopedic clinics developing customized insoles for patients, which sparked my interest in applying engineering to improve mobility. During my postdoctoral training, my work expanded into rehabilitation engineering and wearable robotics.

⚛Research Focus/Goals:
My research focuses on engineering technologies that improve walking, balance, and mobility in clinical populations and older adults. My long-term goal is to develop assistive technologies that people can comfortably use at home without feeling burdened by them—devices that become a natural and enjoyable part of everyday life.

🏫 Teaching Focus/Goals:
My teaching focuses on the fundamentals of biomechanics, particularly the physics and engineering concepts behind human movement. I enjoy mentoring students through hands-on experiences, giving them challenging problems and encouraging them to dig deeper and find their own solutions. My goal is for students to become more confident and independent problem-solvers.

🏊🏼‍♀️ Fun Fact/Hobby & What I’m Looking Forward To:
I love swimming, hiking, going to concerts, and spending quality time with my family and friends.

In my new position, I’m especially excited about mentoring students, developing new collaborations, and advancing research and tools that can be applied to real-life challenges, while helping build a broader and more connected biomechanics community.
