Next Wednesday is the exhibition celebration of "What Does Rare Disease Mean to You?" at Positive Exposure in NYC. Take a look at Isabella Taddeini's piece, In the Dark. She notes that, "The portrait on the left represents my perspective as someone trying to understand, while the portrait on the right represents a person experiencing psychosis, which is present in many rare diseases. The abstract pattern represents a complexity and intensity of an experience that cannot be fully seen or explained from the outside. To me, rare disease means learning from others while recognizing that I can never completely understand what they are going through. This piece expresses the unknown and the emotional distance between witnessing an illness and truly experiencing it." We look forward to seeing you in NYC at the gallery next Wednesday from 5-8pm!

Check out this detail view of our studio art major Jade Varguez's painting! We zoomed in so you can see the braille catching the overhead light. The braille fill up the entire background on this 40" x 30" oil painting. Here is just a little snippet of the text about Jade's piece, "Having a rare disease feels like being in a constant state uncertainty, as one never knows to what extent their disease will affect them. For the most part, rare diseases are incurable, which means that one must accept that they will never live a life without worrying about the fate their chronic illness has in store for them. The rare disease that is represented in this piece is Alport Syndrome, a genetic disorder that exhibits mutations in collagen genes. This disease affects the kidneys, eyes, and ears, causing kidney disease and the possibility of kidney failure, as well as possible hearing loss and vision loss." It is almost graduation day! Looking at this beautiful ceramic piece that Nia-Victoria Gathers created reminds us that she, along with all of our studio art graduates, will soon be starting new chapters in their lives. We certainly hope they all continue to create and inspire us just as they did while here at Creighton!

Students in Rachel Mindrup's Artistic Anatomy are recreating contemporary painter Max Ginsburg's 2010 oil painting titled, "Bus Stop". Each student has chosen one of the figures to model themselves after and recreate their self-portrait in charcoal (with a thoughtfully placed color accent). Tracing paper is laid over the top, so they can then ecorche the figure (essentially draw all the muscles and bones) to see if they understand surface anatomy. We can't wait to see how this group project turns out!

A few nights ago, we celebrated the achievements of our wonderful studio art students. As a faculty, we feel lucky to have the privilege to teach so many interesting, talented, hardworking, and creative students in our program. Additionally, we also celebrated the accomplishment of Emerson Pappas (studio art and chemistry) for earning the 2026 Frances Kraft Memorial Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts (outstanding senior award). Congrats Emerson!

Last weekend, Anna Cheesewright, a studio art and biology honors student on the pre-dental track, was commissioned to create a custom oil painting for the Sing Omaha Concert. The event showcased three newly commissioned paintings (one of which was Anna's) and three world premiere choral works, blending visual and musical art forms. Thank you to Dr. Matt Hill for including our very talented student for this wonderful experience!
