Hello, my name is Raul, I am a graduate student at UNO in the History MA program. I received my Bachelor’s degree in history from UNO in May 2025. This summer, I am interning at Criss Library Archives and Special Collections, where I am working with the UNO student government collection.

I am most excited to learn about the archival aspect of public history and what it takes to work in a university archive. I am a lifelong Nebraskan but I enjoy traveling especially to places that expand my knowledge of history in particular museums or historical sites.

Join us in celebrating M.A. graduate, Katie Dykstra!

Katie was selected as a Fall 2025 Shuflata Graduate Fellow for her interactive teaching project, “Reacting to the Past – Historical Roleplaying Game on the Trial of Phryne.”
She works as a Photo Archive Facilitator at the Durham Museum and plans to pursue full-time museum work after graduation.

🎓 Graduation Spotlight 🎓

Today we celebrate David Clark, Cassandra Mendoza, and Md Robiul Alam Roni, Graduate Teaching Assistants in the Department of History, who are graduating with their Master of Arts this Friday!

David Clark received the History Department's Virginia Dare Shuflata Award, which recognizes excellence in history at the graduate level. This honor reflects David’s outstanding performance in the graduate program. His portfolio project examined how history education was weaponized in N**i Germany as a tool for indoctrinating youth and is one example of the depth and quality of his work. After graduation, David will continue building his résumé and CV as he prepares to apply to PhD programs for Fall 2027.

This year, Cassandra Mendoza earned a GRACA grant for her project, "Native American Policy: From European Contact to the Present." Through her project, Cassandra developed a college-level course exploring shifts in U.S. policy toward Native Americans – a course she hopes to teach in the future. She plans to pursue opportunities as an adjunct instructor after graduation.

Md Robiul Alam Roni received a GRACA grant for his research, “Enduring Trauma: Human Rights Violations and Atrocities Against Rohingya Women.” His work examines the Rohingya Genocide in Myanmar with a focus on human rights violations, gender-based violence, and lasting trauma. Following graduation, he will work as an Assistant Professor of History and Civilization at Khulna University in Bangladesh and pursue his PhD.

Congratulations David, Cassandra, and Roni on earning your M.A. and the culmination of all your hard work! Best wishes for all that comes next. ✨

🎓 Graduation Spotlight 🎓

This week, we’re celebrating our Master’s students who are graduating with their M.A. and recognizing not only their dedication and hard work but also what comes next.

Today, we’re proud to recognize Mason Hartwell and John Schnelker!

Mason Hartwell earned a GRACA grant for his project "Ancient Roads: The Emergence of Modern Settlement Patterns in the Missouri Basin," which examines the human geography and environmental history of Nebraska's Platte River. Mason was honored for his grant at the History Department Awards Ceremony in April (second from left). He also worked as an intern at the Criss Library's Archives and Special Collections, where he assisted with exhibit installations and collection processing. After graduation, Mason plans to pursue a Ph.D. or a career in Public History.

John Schnelker was selected as a Spring 2026 Shuflata Graduate Fellow for his project, “Rocking the Casbah: The Music of U.S. Soldiers During the First Gulf War," and was also recognized at the History Department's Award Ceremony (far right). John anticipates getting a job with the government and moving to Texas upon graduation.

We're excited to recognize their accomplishments and wish them all the best as they take their next steps beyond UNO. Congratulations on earning your M.A.—we’re proud of you both! 🎉

🎉 Congratulations to graduate students Kevin Burga and Rebekah Sidzyik - both recently received GRACA grants!

Kevin will bring Medieval Europe into today’s high school classrooms through thoughtful research and curriculum design.
Rebekah’s research centers on WWII letters exchanged between her grandparents—intimate glimpses into daily life, duty, and connection during wartime.
