What a Tuesday!

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann joined the School of Social Work at Southern Adventist University to talk with our BSW and MSW students about federal student loan changes and what they mean for social work education.

Our students brought great questions, and he shared how Tennessee is responding and how he can carry these concerns to Washington.

The need is real: community and social service jobs are projected to grow much faster than average through 2035 (BLS). 💚

Our MSW students went to the source. 🏛️

This Tuesday morning, Oct 13th., students and faculty from Southern’s School of Social Work met with Rep. Chuck Fleischmann to talk about something that affects every future social worker in our district: federal student loan limits.

Under the 2025 reconciliation law, the Department of Education did not include the MSW among “professional degrees.” That means MSW students face lower federal borrowing limits than other licensed professions, even though social work requires a master’s degree, supervised field education, and state licensure.

Why it matters for Tennessee:

✅ Tennessee projects about 720 social work job openings every year
✅ Rural healthcare settings already face shortages
✅ Fewer social workers means fewer people serving our schools, hospitals, and families

The bipartisan Professional Student Degree Act (H.R. 6718) would add social work to the federal definition of a professional degree.

This is CSWE Competency 5 in action: Engage in Policy Practice. It is also our NASW ethical responsibility to advocate for policies that meet human needs.

THEN & NOW | Meet Lisye Fernandez

Journalism and social work have more in common than you’d think.

Lisye earned her Bachelor’s in Communication and Journalism in São Paulo, Brazil, and spent years in broadcast journalism. Today she is the MSW Program Manager and Field Education Administrator at Southern, while completing her own Master of Social Work.
Both fields taught her to communicate clearly and listen with full attention. And both rest on values found in the NASW Code of Ethics: integrity, the dignity and worth of every person, and the importance of human relationships.

Our Then & Now series continues! 💙

Swipe to meet our Office Manager, Katelynn Webster 👉

Even as a little one, Katelynn knew she wanted to help people. Today, she does exactly that, supporting our students, faculty, and staff every single day.

She doesn't have a social work degree, but she grew up surrounded by social workers, including her mom, a BSW graduate, and several friends from our programs.

Every strong program has someone keeping it all running. For us, that's Katelynn!

🌎♻️ Small choices can make a difference!

This year, the School of Social Work is highlighting Environmental Justice, exploring how the well-being of people, communities, and our planet are deeply connected.

Prof. Candy Dolcy was caught in action yesterday, skipping the Styrofoam and choosing a reusable container for her cafeteria takeout! 💚It’s a simple everyday choice that reflects environmental responsibility and social work practice.

As social workers, we recognize that environmental conditions can shape health, well-being, and quality of life. CSWE Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice challenges us to understand and advocate around policies and systems that impact people and communities, including those connected to environmental justice.

Sometimes, meaningful change starts with the small choices we make every day. 🌱
