Hi everyone! I’m Mariah Estrella, and this summer I’ve been working in the Desert Biome at Biosphere 2 studying how we can use remote sensing to understand desert plants better.

My project looks at whether we can learn about a plant’s internal health and function just by looking at the light it reflects. To do this, I used two main tools. First, the LiCor 6800, which measures gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and environmental conditions, basically capturing how a plant is photosynthesizing and responding to its environment in real time. Second, the ASD FieldSpec 3, which measures how much light a leaf reflects across a range of the light spectrum, from 350 to 2500 nm. It lets me pick up on subtle differences between plants from how they look on the inside to how they are behaving internally.
Think of it like a plant’s fingerprint. Every leaf reflects light a little differently depending on its water content, structure, and health, so by reading that reflectance data, I can understand what’s happening inside the plant without ever having to damage it.

To back this up, I also collected physical measurements from each leaf, such as thickness, mass, leaf area, and water content, so I could connect what the spectrometer was picking up to real physical traits.

What’s made this project so interesting to me is that desert plants are some of the least studied plants out there, even though dry lands cover almost 40% of the Earth’s surface. Getting to work closely with these species taught me so much about how tough and adaptable they really are, and how much resilience it takes for them to survive drought conditions most other plants couldn’t handle.

I’m really grateful for the chance to learn from such an incredible team of mentors this summer and to contribute to research that could help us understand and protect desert ecosystems using tools like satellites down the line.

We have a few Hawaiian peppers that are almost ready to be harvested. These peppers may be small but they can pack a punch! Hawaiian peppers are listed to be 50,000 to 70,000 on the Scoville scale which makes them a fairly hot pepper. The Hawaiian pepper plant can produce fruit year round in their natural habitat. Hi everyone! My name is Abigail Antonela (Tony). I am spending this summer as a REU research intern in the Biosphere 2 Desert Biome. My work focuses on spatial characterization of the controls on soil moisture variation. 

Geospatial analysis in a natural habitat can be quite challenging due to confounding and interactive effects of environmental conditions. However, Biosphere 2 provides a controlled climate and precipitation schedule, making it a great place to experiment! Soon, the Desert Biome will experience an induced drought to research ecosystem resilience. In preparation for this experiment, spatially explicit baselines must be mapped for future time series analysis. 

This week we wrapped up the summer with the final poster session and closing ceremony. I am so excited I got to contribute to this work and gained new field work and research skills everyday. Huge thank you to my mentors: Lindsey Bell, Angie Abarzúa Muñoz, and David J.P. Moore.

Staying protected from the heat is essential when visiting Biosphere 2 especially during these hot summer months. One great way to do that? Take a cue from the sea urchins these clever creatures pile shells and rocks on top of themselves not only to ward off predators, but also to shield themselves from harsh UV rays. We say it’s time to borrow a page from their playbook wear a hat and sun protective clothing on your next visit to Biosphere 2. If it works for a sea urchin it’ll work for you!

The Air plant in the mangroves are thriving! These fascinating plants are unique because they don’t need soil to survive. They prefer bright areas. Air plants are able to absorb all the nutrients they need from water and the air through tiny hairs on their leaves called trichomes. They prefer temperatures between fifty to ninety degrees. Air plants are native to Tropical and subtropical areas. They normally grow in the branches of other trees and rocks without harming the host.

Enjoying the view of the Orchard or as the Biosphereians referred it as the Sweet shop. Since the Biospherians could’t bring in candy and treats they relied on the sweetness grown inside Biosphere 2. In the Orchard we grow: coffee, figs, guava, bananas, lemons and key limes. When they were in need of a sweet treat they would go to the orchard and hope that one of these shrubs were producing the fix they needed.

The prickly pear cactus fruit at Biosphere 2 are starting to ripen up! The typical harvest time for prickly pear is between August to October when the fruit is a deep magenta color. Humans aren’t the only ones who like a prickly pear treat animals like desert tortoise, jackrabbits and javelina enjoy it too. Prickly pear fruit is a great way for desert animals to hydrate and get vital nutrients during these hot summer months.

Hi everyone! My name is Zach Linder, and this summer I am working under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Hoover, Anu Sethuraman, and Miles Fule in the Hoover Research Lab at the University of Arizona. I am developing geospatial models to understand how uranium spreads through groundwater in the Upper and Lower Puerco River Watersheds. These models allow us to visualize how factors such as well-depth, acidity, and other naturally occurring elements affect the spread of uranium in communities impacted by mining.

This week, I travelled with fellow researchers Brooke Damon, Andee Lister, Aaron Tso, and Marisol Beltran-Aparicio to the Rock Point Chapter of the Navajo Nation to gather samples in impacted areas. We surveyed ten windmill-driven wells with a digital water quality probe and portable chemical analyzer to test for metals and acidity. The data will be analyzed and shared with the Rock Point Chapter to help inform future decisions surrounding water quality.

The Department of Energy has selected five University of Arizona research projects through new AI for Science ‘Genesis Mission’ awards. One of the five selected projects was the Landscape Evolution Observatory (LEO). The Landscape Evolution Observatory is a large scale earth science experiment focused on interactions within Critical Zones. The Landscape Evolution Observatory has been using AI to improve predictions of how plants, microbes, water and minerals all interact beneath Earths surface.
