Congratulations to Fowler Engineering alumnus, Brandon Fabré ‘20, for being selected as the 2026 recipient of the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award! 🐾

Brandon earned his BS in Data Analytics (Data Science) and moved on to become a Technical Program Manager at Google.

His involvement in the Chapman community has continued as he has returned countless times for alumni panels, mentoring students, and even helped create Chapman University ‘s first Panthers at Google event! 

Brandon is the FIRST Fowler Engineering alumnus to receive this award, and we couldn’t be more proud!

Meet alum, Jesse Van Norman ‘25! 

With the Vans headquarters just miles away from Chapman, Jesse found the perfect opportunity that combined his passion for 3D animation and innovation! As a Dodge College student, Jesse spent much of his time in our DCI Lab creating personal projects and developing his skills in 3D printing. ⚙️

“Now that I am at Vans, I am learning a lot of new things that I never thought I would have the opportunity to learn. I am diving in 100%, and as long as you do that everywhere, you’re going to gain more knowledge in skills that hopefully might be useful later on. I think that’s a great mentality to have.” - Jesse Van Norman ‘25 

After welcoming current students to tour the Vans headquarters, Jesse returned to the Chapman University campus to share his post-graduate experience. 🎓

Engineering schools located in Orange County > everything else

In addition to sunshine and beaches, is at the center of corporate headquarters, making it a prime location for students looking to connect with leading companies, like vans.

Last week, the Fowler Engineering DCI Lab team was invited to tour the Vans Bunny Garage at Vans’ headquarters. This space combines ideation and innovation with advanced prototyping tools to test new ideas in their footwear, apparel, and accessories. Touring Vans’ own prototyping space showed our team how engineering can lead to unique career pathways. 

“This experience was not only very exciting but also eye-opening,” said software engineering student Jennifer Gutierrez.

“We were able to have a look at the work environment and how the Vans employees collaborated with each other. We talked to many different people on the tour, from designers to recruiters, learning more about what they do for the company and how they help the company grow. This eye-opening experience allowed us to compare our time working in our own makerspace and how the skills we learn are adaptable in other workspaces.” - Jennifer.

At this year’s Engineering Showcase, students presented a variety of projects that demonstrated their ability to apply interdisciplinary topics, such as regenerative medicine, to engineering ⚙️

This year, Sebastian Herrera Vargas (Applied Human Physiology ‘26) and Neera Gajendran (Biochemistry ‘26) took first place with their project, “Biometric Approaches for Next-Generation Biomaterials” 🔬

The duo’s project stems from a research initiative in which their group introduced a novel approach to biomedical healing and tissue regeneration. Their research project, advised by Fowler Engineering faculty member Dr. Andrew Lyon, aims to address longstanding challenges in injury recovery.
