This summer, I interned at a commercial real estate brokerage in Los Angeles. As a newly licensed salesperson, I saw this as a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Throughout the summer, I developed skills in prospecting, outreach, and market research, and sat in on client meetings and property tours. I’m continuing in this position part-time this school year. The communication courses I took prepared me for this role. Courses in mass communication, group communication, and SCC 200 helped prepare me to effectively communicate and work with clients and other professionals.

For my third day, I wanted to share a little about my favorite class I’ve taken with the School of Communication. Being a double major this semester, I am only enrolled in psych classes, but last spring I took SCC 200: Message Design, taught by Dr.Ball. In this class, we worked on creating effective messaging campaigns and learned how to reach our audience through pretesting. Dr. Ball was an amazing teacher who assigned fun, engaging projects that provided a great learning experience. In this class, we worked on a semester-long group project focused on shopping more sustainably. We conducted background research on our target audience and designed multiple versions through pretesting and revisions. This semester, I was lucky to also have her as my internship advisor as I continue working in real estate for academic credit.

For the second day of my takeover, I wanted to share a little of my involvement with Chapman XCTF. Being on Chapman’s track and field team doing jumps and hurdles has honestly been one of my favorite parts of college so far. Last fall, the SAAC Mentorship Program paired me with a mentor, an upperclassman in SCC who was also a student-athlete. Having someone who understood both sides of my world made all the difference; my mentor showed me how to balance being a student-athlete with being a student, and I found myself succeeding in both. Another program that has been an amazing experience for me is the Panther Network Mentorship Program (which I found out about through the School of Comm!). I was paired with a real estate mentor, whom I met with throughout the semester. He shared insights into his career in real estate and let me shadow him for two weeks this summer, during which I toured properties and helped with client outreach. SoC’s mentorship, connections, and courses have greatly helped to shape where my career is headed and my involvement on campus.

Hi! My name is Regina O’Leary, and I’ll be taking over the School of Communication | Chapman University | Higher Education account this week! I’m a junior double-majoring in Psychology and Strategic Corporate Communication. I love hiking, camping, paddleboarding, and going to the beach with friends. I’m so excited to take over the School of Communication IG page this week and show you what my SoC journey looks like as a double-major student-athlete!
