When you're in the cleaning business, you never know what the next challenge will be.
Here is the challenge from tonight.
I need help. We have a fabric tension display that someone marked with a permanent marker. What is your recommendation?
Here is my answer:
To remove permanent marker from a fabric tension display, apply rubbing alcohol to the back of the stain to break down the ink, blotting it outward onto a clean cloth to prevent spreading.
Work in small sections, being careful not to scrub too aggressively, as this can stretch the polyester fabric.
The Best Cleaning Methods:
Rubbing Alcohol (91% or Isopropyl): This is the most effective solvent for breaking down the resins in permanent ink.
Hand Sanitizer: If you do not have straight alcohol, a clear alcohol-based hand sanitizer works well as a gel that won't run or spread onto fabric.
Hairspray: Aerosol hairspray often contains high levels of alcohol and can be sprayed directly onto the stain to lift it.
Test a hidden area: Before treating the marked area, test your solvent on a small, inconspicuous part of the display (like an inside hem or edge) to ensure it doesn't damage or fade the dye.
Layer with a barrier: Place a clean, dry towel or thick paper towel between the fabric's front and back. This absorbs the lifted ink, preventing it from bleeding through to the other side of your display.
Dab from the backside: Apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton swab or clean cloth, then gently dab it onto the back of the permanent marker stain. The ink should begin to dissolve and transfer onto the towel underneath.
Blot, do not scrub: Use a clean, dry cloth to blot the stain continuously. Scrubbing back and forth can spread the ink wider and damage the fabric's tight weave.
Rinse and dry: Once the marker is removed, gently rinse the treated area with cold water using a damp cloth. Let the fabric air dry completely.
Do not use harsh solvents and avoid heat.
