How can training data help drive smarter readiness decisions?

At TechNet Orlando 2026 on September 17, experts from the military, industry, and academia came together for the “Turning Training Data into Decisions: Analytics and Readiness at Scale” panel to explore how data and analytics can support military training and readiness.

We were proud to have Christina Bouwens, Ph.D., Director of Special Projects at the UCF Pegasus Research Institute, participate as a panelist and contribute to this important conversation.

Dr. Ivan Garibay, UCF professor of industrial engineering and management systems, IST affiliated research faculty member, and director of the Complex Adaptive Systems Laboratory, is leading a new $20 million National Science Foundation initiative designed to help promising federally funded technologies make the leap from the lab to the marketplace.

As principal investigator of the National Commercialization and Translation Institute (NCTI), Dr. Garibay will help guide a national effort supporting small businesses working in fields such as AI, biotechnology, and quantum computing.

The initiative builds on Dr. Garibay’s decades of work advancing research commercialization and his expertise in modeling and simulating complex systems at UCF’s Institute for Simulation & Training.

We’re proud to see Dr. Garibay and UCF helping bring innovation closer to real-world impact!

UCF’s recognition as the No. 5 most innovative public university in the nation reflects the hands-on research and mentorship happening across campus.

For Dr. Mohsen Rakhshan, electrical and computer engineering professor, IST research faculty member, and director of the Laboratory for Interaction of Machine and Brain (LIMB), innovation means helping students turn challenging questions into solutions with real-world potential.

Rakhshan mentors UCF computer science graduate student Eugenio Diaz on research exploring whether technology can help a prosthetic hand recognize what it touches.

“Mentoring undergraduate students is both teaching and research,” Dr. Rakhshan said. “I try to teach students how to think and guide them to find answers to what is known and unknown.”

Their project combines AI, neuroscience and engineering to identify textures using tactile data and spiking neural networks — technology that could one day help prostheses restore a sense of touch.
