CEELAB had a lot going on this past Friday. In the morning, we returned to Burns Charter School in Volusia County to continue our collaborative project on atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the Indian River Lagoon and on their campus. Next, students in my class learned how to make mini-POSH oyster restoration units on campus with help from Kye, Jacob, and Aaron. That was followed by some dedicated AMSA pre-medical club members helping with mangrove gardening. Thank you all. This week there will be more mangrove gardening on Wednesday from 10 - 11:30 and Friday from 3 - 4:30 PM, and next Sunday will be our second oyster ring making event day on UCF campus. Our first non-plastic, biodegradable oyster ring making event on UCF campus was a great success with 119 rings completed by UCF students and CCA community members. We will be making more rings this semester on Sunday mornings from 9 AM - noon on October 18, November 8, November 15, and December 6. Contact L. Yesterday (10/2/26) was the start of our UCF/Burns Science & Technology Charter School collaboration to have UCF undergraduates and Burns high school students work together to collect data on atmospheric deposition of microplastics on their campus and in the Indian River Lagoon. This project will result in scientific conference presentations and lesson plans to share with other educators. We thank the Indian River Lagoon for funding this effort.

Yesterday was CEELAB mangrove gardening on UCF campus - look at all the wonderful folks who showed up to help! Mangrove gardening happens every Wednesday from 10 - 11:30 and Friday from 3 - 4:30. Tomorrow, Sunday October 4 will be our first non-plastic cement-jute oyster ring making session for oyster reef restoration for fall 2026. We will hold it also on UCF campus behind the biology field building from 9 AM - noon. Please join us if you can! Contact Linda Walters ([email protected]) for waiver and additional directions).
