This we're all about habitat restoration!

We've had so many wonderful people help us construct BESE mats and cement units this season. Thanks to your hard work, MDC and our conservation partners are able to support habitat health, stabilize shorelines, and increase biodiversity through our restoration efforts in the Lagoon and beyond!

Didn't get a chance to lend a hand but still want to? Our team just added four more Conservation Cement Workshops in June that need volunteers! Sign up today at https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/marinediscoverycenter/items/505365/?full-items=yes&flow=1105333

A May outlook from an NCCOS-funded project team indicates record-high in the Gulf, Caribbean, and eastern Atlantic. Major beaching events have been reported around the Caribbean and Lesser Antilles islands as well as along the Florida Keys and east coast of Florida. Sargassum amount in most regions is likely to increase in June.https://optics.marine.usf.edu/projects/SaWS/pdf/Sargassum_outlook_2026_bulletin05_USF.pdf

Three more days of oyster reef restoration in the IRL completed this week with our stellar student crew and excellent partners. New reef names include Mermaid Reef, Sunshower Reef, Sargassum Reef, and Limulus Reef. One new reef remains unnamed to date. Photos show lots of action, including deploying a new student research project, and spotting a few more lagoon animals that we could use help identifying. Thanks to IRLNEP, NOAA, FL FWCC, CCA FL, UCF and Disney Conservation for support!

Event will occur on Monday, June 1 from 8 AM - 11 AM behind the Biology Field Research Building. Anyone 16+ is welcome to help (if 16-17 years old, parent must be present). Please contact Linda Walters if interested at [email protected] for details. UCF waiver must be completed prior to participating. Thanks!
