** New date for our MSW dinner: 11/5/2026!

Join us for dinner and dialogue!

The Equity Stewardship Team and the Student Social Work Organization will be meeting over two nights at the School of Social Work to discuss the results of the 2025 student survey.

The Fall 2025 student survey provided a snapshot of students’ learning in the School of Social Work. The findings show that students bring different work, caregiving, financial, community, identity, and life experiences to their social work education.

The BSW dinner will be held on Wednesday, October 28th from 5:00-6:15 pm.

The MSW dinner will be held on Thursday, November 5th from 4:30-5:45 pm.

Bring a dish to share to Dunn Hall 417, or register for a Zoom link.

Closing Keynote — Advocacy in Action: Using Your Voice, Even When It Shakes

"Advocacy in Action: Using Your Voice, Even When It Shakes” is an interactive workshop that examines how fear can limit effective leadership in the advocacy arena, which requires courageous action. Grounded in the principles of social work, trauma-informed practice, and empowerment theory, the session will have participants identify personal and systemic barriers, engage in a guided reflective exercise, and participate in a collective “smash the fear” activity designed to release limiting beliefs symbolically. Intended for social workers, public health professionals, educators, and emerging leaders. Participants will leave with a renewed sense of agency and a clear commitment to advocacy-driven leadership.

Athena Bryce is a public health social worker, part-time faculty member at the University of Maine School of Social Work, and the President of the Greater Bangor Area NAACP. Athena works at Bangor Public Health and Community Services, where she specializes in harm reduction and overdose prevention. Her work challenges inequitable systems and processes to reduce the negative health impacts of substance use and keep people connected in the community. Athena is a first-generation Jamaican-American and proudly calls Maine her home. In addition to her advocacy work, she passionately embraces joy and fun.

Are you registered to vote? And do you have a plan to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, 2026?
This year’s election includes several important races that will help determine the trajectory of our state and country.

The perspectives of new voters are critically important. Our democracy needs your voice and participating in the elections can be empowering and fun! The first step is getting registered. It’s easy and we’re here to help.

UMaine UVote is your nonpartisan, on-campus resource for all things voting and election-related. Get registered, educate yourself to make an informed choice, and get all the info you need about election day at: https://umaine.edu/studentlife/uvote/ (QR code on flier). Students are invited to join the Student Social Work Organization for a monthly community dinner! The dinner is tomorrow (9/25) night at 6:30 in the social work lounge!

What a fantastic day this weekend at Wellspring’s 11th Annual Race for Recovery in Bangor!

Altogether, seventeen of our students across the junior and senior BSW and MSW classes volunteered for the event, and four ran the race! Our students made posters on Thursday night at a Student Social Work Organization event.

Wellspring does amazing work in the greater Bangor area. The Race for Recovery has become an annual tradition for students at the School of Social Work. Volunteering for the event is inspiring, rewarding, and helps students learn and grow as future social workers.
