One of our Orono adaptive athletes from the Ellsworth area lost their home, their pets, and all of their belongings in a house fire yesterday. Scott is former military and current EMS provider. Please consider donating to help this family with their immediate needs if you are able. We have put them in touch with the Red Cross for assistance services but they are in need of assistance with their immediate basic needs. This is an incredibly difficult time for their family. Thank you.

We are looking for your help!! Our Silent Auction has finished and we are hoping to close it out. We have been trying to get in touch with everyone that hasn’t claimed their items. We only have half of our auction bids claimed and paid for. If all of our items pay out, we will have raised over 7,000 on the auction. If you haven’t claimed your prizes, please reach out to us so we can wrap this up and get the $ taken care of so it can be put to use for our folks.

We also have a couple unclaimed donor gifts from our Battle of the Bears event that we would like to get to their owners. Unfortunately, these donors did not provide address or phone contact during their purchase and did not enable notifications so all of our emails are getting sent back as blocked.

We would love to get everything hand delivered or mailed before the end of the week!!

We are having a pick up of paid auction items at the Alfond Arena tomorrow afternoon during our adaptive hockey practice. We will also be collecting donations for a local first responder family that lost their home and all of their belongings in a house fire yesterday. We will be at the Alfond from 1-3 tomorrow afternoon if you are interested in making a donation to assist this family in need.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to lead Beyond the Burn: Connection & Awareness, an in-service for the burn care team at Mass General Brigham, Ellison 14, on behalf of Burn Survivors of New England.

This was a conversation I hoped to bring to the burn unit because I believe the connection between clinical care and the local burn survivor community should begin before someone needs it not years after leaving the hospital.

I shared the perspective of our President, Gina Russo, through an interview I conducted with her. Her words brought something to the room I never could on my own: the lived experience of not always being ready for peer support and eventually discovering the power of the burn survivor community.

Burn survivor Mylene Larsen joined me, bringing another voice to the conversation. We also shared our film, Here After: More Than Survival, which led to discussion about potentially making it available to survivors & families before discharge.

One idea stood out most: ONE INTRODUCTION. TWO AUDIENCES.
The burn survivor may not be ready to meet us. But their family or loved ones may be.

That is why information about the burn survivor community should be PROVIDED, NOT PUSHED.

We talked about survivors who went 10, even 20 years without knowing BSONE existed—and wondered how finding this community earlier might have changed their recovery.

I also left with another goal: this connection has to be sustainable.

Burn care teams and roles change. Regular in-services, a consistent hospital contact, and a process for transferring that relationship could help ensure BSONE doesn't have to continually be reintroduced, but becomes an established resource for survivors and families through hospitalization, discharge and beyond.

Later that evening, our quarterly In-Person Group Peer Support Meeting at Spaulding welcomed new and familiar faces for Strength in Words. We explored the words we give ourselves, words others give us, and words we choose to carry forward. Watching those words transform throughout our time together was incredibly moving.

Connection doesn't end at discharge. Our job is to make sure people know the community is there when they are ready.
