The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology at the University of Maine is seeking applications for a lecturer position in Wildlife Ecology. This is a 9-month academic year appointment with a fixed term of 2-years, but with potential for extension beyond the initial 2-year period. The successful applicant will teach introductory and upper-division courses in wildlife ecology and management, which will include courses in animal population dynamics and wildlife policy and administration. This is a 100% teaching position, but we anticipate opportunities for the lecturer to participate in undergraduate advising, departmental service, and other professional development opportunities at UMaine, with appropriate course release to offset time investment in those areas.

We are seeking participants in a research study titled- “Effect of Climate Heating and Economic Shocks on Anglers’ Willingness and Capacity to Ice Fish in Central Maine”. The focus of this research is to explore beliefs and attitudes about the present and future of ice fishing in Maine, especially those that motivate Maine’s ice-anglers to harvest fish for recreation or sustenance.

Participation would involve answering questions about your observations and experience ice fishing in Maine. The survey primarily consists of multiple-choice questions and should take about 10–15 minutes. The first page of the survey link includes an informed consent form with more information about this research study. Day three of the wildlife Research Learning Experience students hiked and discovered amphibians and reptiles along Maine’s unspoiled rugged coastline. This afternoon we went to Lubec flats to scope hundreds of migratory shore birds, scoters, and spotted a Merlin hunting. It wasn’t all outdoor adventure - students settled in this evening to conduct research on the conservation of Maine’s wildlife. And continued their cutthroat UNO game to unwind from an exciting and spectacular day in Downeast Maine!

First years wildlife ecology students are on an adventure for their Research Learning Experience. They’ve met Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife regional wildlife biologist Steve Dunham, found sea creatures in the intertidal, seen some of what downeast Maine has to offer and they finished off their evening with a sunset paddle in Cobscook bay!
