Calling all School of Forest Resources alums and current students for 2026-2027 UMSAF/SFR Mentorship Program!

The goal of this program is to connect students with professionals in the field so the students can learn more about the profession and what it takes to be successful. There is considerable flexibility in how and when students and professionals meet, and this will largely be sorted out after they have been matched.
That being said, any interested professional should be willing and able to travel to Orono periodically as transportation can be a little more difficult for the students. We also understand the importance of getting out into the forest and SFR can subsidize some travel for the students.

Down East Magazine interviewed Jay Wason, associate professor in the University of Maine’s School of Forest Resources, and Aaron Weiskittel, director of the UMaine’s Center for Research on Sustainable Forests on what the future may hold for the state’s forests.

Researchers are exploring the past and present in order to anticipate what comes next for Maine’s woods amid a rapidly changing climate.

Hi SFR! Just a quick update on the new Sawmill Training & Education Center (SAWTEC) in the Demeritt Forest. Lumber framing is currently going up for the classroom buildings. As you know, the SAWTEC will enhance the teaching, learning, and research environment for our students and faculty alike. The project should be completed by the end of December 2026.
