The Chico Science project continues to move forward with great momentum. The steel framing is up and the building is starting to take shape. Concrete pour for the roof deck and curbs is next. The project remains on track for a March 2027 opening.

Progress is moving steadily forward on the New Cosmetology and Barbering Building at our Chico Campus! The exterior is taking shape, and the project remain on track for a January 2027 opening.

The Chico Expansion project that includes the new Cosmetology and Barbering building and Chico Science building are progressing as planned. Steel superstructure for the Cosmetology and Barbering building is complete along with approximately 95% of exterior framing and interior framing and the site work continues for the Chico Science building. The new Cosmetology and Barbering building will contain specialized labs, faculty offices, a classroom, dedicated Laundry Room, cosmetology dispensary, lactation room, all gender restrooms, and client entrance/waiting room. The Chico Science building contains a science lab, stock room, offices, all gender restrooms, and lactation room.

Please meet Kim Jones, Butte College Director of Facilities Planning and Management.

Kim has been working at Butte College and in Facilities Planning and Management for 35 years. She is responsible for managing the various construction projects on campus and oversees the following departments: Building Maintenance and Construction, Custodial Services, Grounds Maintenance, Printing Services, Shipping Receiving and Mail Services, Technical Services, and Transportation.

The new Science Building and Planetarium is progressing and is on schedule to be open for classes in fall 2025. The roof was poured in March 2024. This was the largest concrete pour and covered 16,000 square foot of area and approximately 500 yards of concrete. Rebar for the planetarium dome was installed in May. Interior framing has begun and the inside of the building is starting to take shape.

The new Science building is 72,276-square-foot and will have lab and lecture spaces for microbiology, anatomy, physiology, zoology/botany, geology, astronomy, meteorology, physics and chemistry; 38 faculty offices; a cadaver room; and collaborative learning spaces. The Planetarium is 2,400 square foot and will seat 60 students and offer 360-degree views of the sky and cosmos. These two buildings will be centrally located at Butte College's main campus south of the Allied Health Public Service Center Building and next to the Math Building.

This project is funded by Measure J, and the State's Physical Plant and Instructional Support Block Grant.
