“UW-O owned a plane, purchased with a grant and used especially for seismographic studies by physicist and pilot John Karl (seated with the white hat). Madison had recently announced that no campus except Madison could own a plane – even though it was a UW-O grant that had funded it, Madison was going to take the plane. Jim, as dean, decided that, since several of the geology faculty had never seen the field camp that was such an integral part of the program, they should fly as a group to see it while they still had a plane. Jim’s secretary later told Jim that, literally just as she knew they were lifting off from Whitman Field, she received a phone call from Madison demanding the plane – she explained that thus they couldn’t be reached – she was in on the plan and was quite delighted. That’s the story as I remember it. The plane was eventually transferred to Madison, but only after the Yukon trip.”

A retired Physics faculty member (John Karl) recently passed away (on Saturday). While John served on the UW Oshkosh Physics faculty, he taught classes and conducted research with Geology faculty during his time at UW Oshkosh. It is a great example of people working across discipline boundaries. John made many valuable contributions to the geosciences, one of which was playing a fundamental role in collecting aeromagnetic data over a large area of the state of Wisconsin. A funeral is being held tomorrow. Our condolences to the Karen and the family.
