Meet Erin Layton, the writer and performer behind the one-woman play Magdalen, coming to campus on September 17th.

Based in Brooklyn, she is an award-winning solo performing artist, producer, and published playwright. Erin’s previous acting credits include the two person adaptation of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Off-Broadway Alliance Nominee), Let Us Go Then, You and I (Undergroundzero Theatre Festival), and Weird Sisters (East Third Ensemble), among others.

Magdalen, Erin's first full-length play and solo performance, was published by Indie Theatre Now, presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and shortlisted for an Amnesty International Award. It has previously been presented at The Kumble Theater, the New York City Irish Center, Lehman College, and Hofstra University, among others.

Some histories are hidden. Some voices are silenced. But some stories demand to be heard.

On September 17, Magdalen brings a largely unknown chapter of Ireland’s history to the stage at SUNY Oswego.

Written and performed by Erin Layton, this one-woman play transports us to an abandoned Magdalene Laundry in present-day Dublin, where the voices of its past begin to emerge: a young “penitent” washer-woman, a parish priest, the Reverend Mother.

Inspired by the true stories of the women and girls who labored in one of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, Magdalen confronts a painful history of shame, silence, faith, power, and survival.

We cannot change what happened. But we can listen. We can remember. And we can bear witness.

Announcing our 2026-2027 Performing Arts Series!

The series will kick off with Magdalen, a layered, one-woman play inspired by the true stories of the women and girls who labored in one of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries, exploring a shameful and largely unknown period of a history. In November, we'll welcome Kings Return, a dynamic four-piece vocal group who take pride in crafting a diverse yet supremely cohesive a ca****la sound, mixing R&B, gospel, jazz, and bright bursts of pop. In February, we'll welcome Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance, a dance company that merges science and art to explore our relationship with the environment and to advocate for climate justice and a more equitable future. The season will close with Liminal Blue, an site-specific animation about Lake Ontario created by transdisciplinary artist Isabel Beavers. The animation will be projected onto a waterscreen on Glimmerglass Lagoon during the month of April.

Currently on view at the Everson Museum of Art, SUNY Oswego Professor Renqian Yang's exhibition Neither Here nor Elsewhere is an exploration of duality through intricate ceramic forms. She brings together personal and collective histories, organic and urban forms, and local and universal experiences, exploring how emotions endure and connect people across cultures, places, and time.

Let's take a closer look at Torso of Herakles! This sculpture, created in 2023 by SUNY Oswego Professor Ben Enter, has been on view near Tyler Hall as part of the Outdoor Sculpture Initiative for 3 years.

Next time you pass by, be sure to spend some time with this compelling combination of ancient sculpture and childhood nostalgia.

For ARTSwego Director Lowell Hutcheson, inspiration is all around. Her practice is shaped by the Lake Ontario's erosion patterns, sediment layers, and shifting shorelines. No two pieces are alike — each one carries the quiet variation found in nature.

As part of The Ceramic School's Clay Camp 2026, she'll be leading a virtual workshop that teaches you how to draw inspiration from nature to create intricate, organic textured surfaces that embrace imperfection and variation.
