Fall is a great time to pause, reset, and give yourself permission to take a break. 🍂

Whether you need a quiet space, a short walk, a sensory tool, or a little flexibility in your day, taking care of yourself matters. Rest doesn't have to be earned, and breaks don't have to look the same for everyone.

As we settle into the second half of the semester, remember to check in with yourself and give yourself what you need. You deserve rest, even when your to-do list isn't finished.

What helps you reset when you’re feeling overwhelmed? Share your favorite strategy in the comments!

A Fall Break Reset 🍂

Fall break may be behind us, but a reset doesn't have to happen on a specific day. As we settle back into the semester, this is a reminder that you don't have to return from a break feeling completely recharged or ready to tackle everything on your to-do list.

Take a moment to check in with yourself. What is working for you right now? What might need to change? Maybe it's adjusting your routine, breaking assignments into smaller steps, making time for rest, or reaching out for support.

You don't have to do everything at once, and you don't have to do it all alone. Give yourself permission to start where you are and take the semester one step at a time.

The Miller Center is here to support you as you navigate the rest of the semester.

Join us today in 304 Shriver Center from 1-3 p.m. for Dear Disabled Me: Letters to Myself.

Disability identity can be joyful, complicated, empowering, frustrating—and sometimes all of those things at once.

Write a letter to any version of yourself. Tell your younger self what you know now. Celebrate something about who you are today. Give your future self encouragement. Or simply write what you need to hear right now.

There is no right way to feel about disability and no right way to write your letter.

Take it with you, or leave it anonymously for our community to read.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Su***de prevention is a community responsibility. It means creating spaces where people can talk about mental health without judgment, taking someone seriously when they say they’re struggling, checking in when something doesn’t seem right, and knowing where to turn when more support is needed.

You don’t have to have the perfect words. You can start with:

“I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately. How are you doing?”

“I’m here to listen.”

“Do you want me to stay with you while we find someone who can help?”

And if you are concerned that someone may be thinking about su***de, it is okay to ask directly: “Are you thinking about su***de?”

Support is available:

• Call or text 988 for the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7.
• Miami students can call the H.O.P.E. Line at 855-249-5649 for 24/7 support.
• Text MUHOPE to 741741 for free, 24/7 crisis support.
• Contact Student Counseling Service at 513-529-4634 during business hours.
• Submit a Student of Concern report if you are worried about a Miami student and want to help connect them with support.

Sometimes su***de prevention begins with something small: noticing, asking, listening, and helping someone connect with support.

If there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency or someone's safety is at immediate risk, call 911.

September 8 is 988 Day.

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out for support. The 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, a mental health or substance use crisis, or concern about someone they care about.

Call or text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

Miami University students also have access to:

• H.O.P.E. Line: Call 855-249-5649 for 24/7 immediate support, crisis intervention, and stabilization from a crisis support specialist.

• MUHOPE Crisis Text Line: Text MUHOPE to 741741 for free, 24/7 mental health support.

• Student Counseling Service: Call 513-529-4634 for support during business hours.

• Student of Concern: If you’re worried about a Miami student—or you need support yourself—you can submit a Student of Concern report to help connect the student with appropriate university resources.

Reaching out for help can look different for everyone. Whether you call, text, tell a friend, contact a counselor, or submit a concern for someone else, there are people ready to listen and help you figure out what comes next.

If there is an immediate, life-threatening emergency or someone's safety is at immediate risk, call 911.

Good design works for everyone.

Universal Design is the practice of creating environments, products, and experiences that can be used by as many people as possible, without requiring adaptation or specialized design. While Universal Design benefits people with disabilities, it also makes life easier for parents with strollers, older adults, people carrying heavy bags, someone with a temporary injury, and countless others.

The 7 Principles of Universal Design are:
• Equitable Use
• Flexibility in Use
• Simple and Intuitive Use
• Perceptible Information
• Tolerance for Error
• Low Physical Effort
• Size and Space for Approach and Use

Universal Design reminds us that accessibility isn't an afterthought—it's a foundation. When we design with diverse users in mind from the beginning, everyone benefits.

This Disability Pride Month, take a look around your classroom, workplace, or community. What is one small change that could make your space more accessible for everyone?
