Up next in MJF's alumni highlight series is Srimathi Sridhar (JRN '11)
Tell us about yourself:
I work in multimedia and communications at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. In my current role, I lead on video productions highlighting the impactful work helping alleviate poverty around the world for people and the planet. My projects have taken me to Benin, Kenya, Korea, Bosnia, Ecuador, and France. Seeing development in action helps fuel my work and desire to share impactful stories that resonate with audiences.
Why MJF at Miami:
I've always loved to write, that bug bit me at a young age with a journalist father. I would say double majoring in English Lit and Journalism allowed me to hone in on my writing skills and be creative when I needed to be, and be newsy and direct when that was needed. In my career today, I see how dabbling in different forms of writing, researching, and creative arts in college helped shape how I now try to translate heavy and oftentimes tough content into digestible, compelling narratives.
Advice for current students:
Stay curious, stay open. When I was a freshman at Miami, I joined the Indian Student Association more out of curiosity than having been immersed in my culture previously (which I hadn't, by the way!). I stayed on because I happened to become best friends with my next door dorm neighbor from Tappan Hall, and it was the best decision I made: those four years gave me some of my greatest friends and memories. So do things that you wouldn't normally do. Take a chance. These are some of the best years of your life to truly grow into who you are, what you like, what you don't like, and where you want to be.
Advice for graduating seniors:
Life is just getting started: take the best moments forward, learn from the worst ones, and know that no matter where you go or what you do, the Oxford bubble truly never leaves you. It's like the saying goes..."How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
Fondest memory of Miami:
I have too many memories to count, but I would say the Diwali dance show the Indian Student Association put on every year. As someone who danced in this show freshman through senior year of college, it really gave me some of the most fun memories and best of friends. It also made me appreciate my culture in a way I hadn't before and it was good to have that in my life at that time. I also have to give a shout out to King Library, where I worked all four years of college. King will always have a special place in my heart!
What does being a Miami alum mean to you:
It gives me a lot of pride being a Miami alum! I would say being an alum means carrying forward the lessons, friendships, and growth I experienced during my time there. It's also about having this sense of belonging — knowing that no matter where I go, I’m connected to a broader family that has shaped who I am today.
