Seismology Student Workshop

Hello Seismologists!

We invite graduate students to participate in the upcoming Seismology Student Workshop (SSW) to be held June 16th-18th, 2024, at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, United States. The application deadline is May 2, 2024. This workshop is completely student-run and organized with the aim of bringing together graduate students who conduct research in seismology and earthquake-related fields. [This workshop is only open to graduate students, and we encourage advisors to notify their students about this opportunity!]



This is the first time that SSW will be held at the University of Washington, and we intend to build on the success of our previous workshops by providing a friendly environment that fosters in-depth scientific discussion. Topics related to the scope of this workshop include but are not limited to:

Seismic imaging of tectonic processes

Tomographic/inverse techniques

Earthquake source processes

Rock mechanics

Seismic anisotropy

Seismicity and tremor

Computational seismology

The format will be a series of talks and poster sessions that take place over the course of the two days. Thanks to the sponsorship from the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network and the Seismological Society of America, we will cover the cost of accommodation, meals, and refreshments each day during the workshop. Registration preference will be given to those who submit abstracts.

Online Application Form. A title, abstract, and an optional figure must be submitted to be considered for an oral or poster session.

The application deadline is May 2, 2024. We will inform attendees about their application status on 4 May 2024. The registration fee will be $150 if you are accepted. Please feel free to forward this to other students who might be interested.

Seismology Student Workshop 2023 Applications are now OPEN! The 2023 Seismology Student Workshop will be back in person this year after 3 years! The workshop will be held from Wednesday March 15 to Friday March 17, 2022 at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY. The application deadline is January 30, 2023.

Update: SSW2022 Postponed

First off thank you to everyone who applied and was interesting in the Seismology Student Workshop 2022. Unfortunately due to the lack of presenting applicants, the organizing committee has made the decision to postpone this workshop to a later date.
As of now there is no confirmed timeline for when the workshop will be postponed to yet. We are looking at the possibility of postponing the workshop to Summer or Fall of 2022 with a chance of it being able to be held in person or hybrid. Once we do have that scheduled and confirmed we will make sure to let everyone know.
We look forward to seeing you hopefully soon. In the meantime if you have any questions or comments please feel free to reach out to us! Thanks!
