When we hold onto hatred, science shows it doesn't just affect others — it closes down our own hearts, impacts our health, and shapes the children watching us.

Compassion is a skill that can be developed. Explore CCARE's education programs and bring this work into your professional and personal life.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Stephanie Balters as CCARE’s new Director of Research. She brings exceptional scientific vision, multidisciplinary depth, and a rare combination of clarity, integrity, and deep human presence. These qualities make her the ideal leader to guide CCARE’s research mission forward.

Dr. Balters bridges neuroscience, engineering, and lived human experience, opening new pathways for discovery and real-world impact. Through her innovative work in single-brain and dual-brain neuroscience, she studies compassion as a dynamic process that unfolds between people in real interactions. This approach allows CCARE to better understand how compassion works in the brain, why it supports resilience and healing, and when it can be strengthened through intentional practice.

Under her leadership, CCARE will deepen the scientific foundation of its educational programs and compassion-based practices, linking lived experience with measurable brain science. Learn more about Dr. Balters at ccare.stanford.edu > About > Our People.

As we step into 2026, we're reflecting on what matters most: How we show up for ourselves. How we care for others. How we meet the challenges around us with compassion, wisdom, and heart.

This year, what if compassion became more than an aspiration? What if it became your practice, your way of being, your daily choice?

At CCARE, we're committed to supporting your compassion journey - whether you're just beginning or deepening a lifelong practice.

Here's to a year of turning inward, reaching outward, and cultivating the compassion our world needs most.

Happy New Year from all of us at Stanford CCARE 💛
