The On-Campus Services Utilization Survey closes on Friday!

We need your input to advocate for improved campus resources and more! We are hoping to gain insight into how campuses are aiding non-traditional post-secondary students in their pursuit of a degree. The On-Campus Services Utilization Survey will help campuses serve their military-connected students as efficiently as possible.

The survey identifies several common resources found on college campuses around the country. The purpose of the survey is to understand which campus services student veterans and military-connected students use during the academic year and to take a deeper look as to why some campus services are potentially underutilized. This is an opportunity for student veterans and military-connected students to inform policy makers, stakeholders, and the public regarding campus services’ strengths and weaknesses for student veterans and military-connected students on a national scale.

The survey’s results will provide important data for schools to improve campus resources. Student veterans and SVA chapters can use the findings to partner with schools to increase the inclusiveness of campus services for student veterans and military-connected students, such as implementing Disability Services Liaisons (DSLs), Veteran Resource Center expansions, etc.

Student veterans and military-connected students are encouraged to complete the survey and share it with others! The survey closes this Friday (March 29) at 11:59 p.m. ET, so be sure to pass it on to your chapter members and friends today!

Take the survey here.

Housing Allowance Changes

AN IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR VETERANS AND DEPENDENTS

Changes are coming to the monthly housing allowance for student veterans and veteran dependents using Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits.

A recent federal law now requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) – starting August 1, 2018 – to base the monthly housing allowance on where, by zip code, a student veteran or veteran dependent receives a majority of his or her instruction (classes, labs, etc.).

This change applies only to veterans and dependents using Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) VA educational benefits.

The monthly housing allowances these students currently receive may change, and that monthly amount may vary by semester. Since the amount is determined by the zip code where a majority of these students’ learning takes place, it may differ depending on whether that is on the main FSU campus (32306), in Innovation Park (32310), the Panama City campus (32405), one of the University’s satellite campuses, an international (study abroad) site, or the site of any clinical studies, practicums, internships, externships, etc.

Because of the scope of this change, students using Chapter 33 benefits should expect delays in the processing of their benefits for Fall 2018. Plus, additional documentation will likely be required from these students.

This change is part of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017, also known as the “Forever GI Bill.” Should you have questions, please contact the FSU Student Veterans Center – (850) 644-9562 / [email protected] – or call the VA Education line toll-free at 1-888-442-4551.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the implementation of this substantial change.
