Please join us in welcoming Dr. Richard Wallace to the Gulf Coast State College Visual & Performing Arts Division!

Richard Wallace joins Gulf Coast State College with more than 30 years of experience in theatre as an educator, director, dramaturg, performer, and arts professional. A native of Florence, Alabama and new to Panama City, Richard’s work spans small-town community theatre to Broadway. His career includes The Broadway League, Broadway teaching-artist programs, The University of Alabama, Shelton State Community College, Calhoun Community College, The Callback Company, and Appel Farm Arts and Music Camp. He founded Optidefno in 1997 and spent 15 years producing touring theatrical productions and comedy shows across the state of Alabama and New York City. He led workshops for International Thespian Society conferences, brought theatre into Title I elementary schools through two Alabama State Council on the Arts grants, and locally, served as dramaturg for Destin School of the Arts’ Godspell featuring GCSC students. Colleagues and students describe Richard as direct, funny, highly organized, unconventional, and deeply invested in helping students find their own voices.

At Gulf Coast State, Richard teaches Understanding Theatre, Acting I and II, Voice and Movement Techniques for the Stage, Introduction to Musical Theatre, and Script Analysis, while directing the Fall Black Box and Spring Main Stage productions. He builds classes and productions around the people in the room rather than a one-size-fits-all formula. He expects students to work hard, think critically, take creative risks, and develop the confidence to make strong choices of their own. His goal is to build a program that prepares students to transfer into competitive four-year theatre programs or begin professional work after earning their associate degree. He also wants Gulf Coast productions to strengthen the department’s connection with Panama City through theatre that entertains, engages, challenges, or simply gives audiences a great night out.

Richard earned a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Alabama with a focus in Musical Theatre Dramaturgy, an M.A. in Educational Theatre from New York University, and a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Birmingham-Southern College. His dissertation research on film-based Broadway musicals produced a statistical model for predicting the commercial prospects of film adaptations and drew national attention from Forbes. Outside of GCSC, he continues that work through Broadway Pro: Broadway Professional covers his dramaturgy, directing, and industry work; Broadway Professor focuses on teaching, coaching, and performer development; and Broadway Prognostics applies research and statistical analysis to the commercial potential of Broadway musicals and prospective adaptations. Outside of theatre, Richard enjoys New York Yankees baseball, Alabama football, pub trivia, golf, pinball, and has a habit of making far more sports and pop-culture references than most people expect from one person.
